I ' 1 Stanford, Ky., January 20, 1880 w. P. WALTON. The failure of the House tj pass '.he billlo cquallzi tho number of peremptory jury challenge in criminal esses, shows that nothing in the nature of reforms, may be expected of a body of men, the majority of whom paw fur Uvtyeia and are dcpen dent for their mpport upon their success in acquitting the men, whose deeda sake Kentucky a hiss and a by word for Border and other atartling crimes. The bill was originally introduced by Mr. Bobbitt to make the challenges 10 each for the Commonwealth and the defendant, but it waa amended and 12 fixed u the number. The discussion occupied three days, during which a tcore of jack leg lawyers made the same epoechee they would hate gotten off in a murder trial before a jury. The newspapers were tale i to task for foreign ing against crime and the faulty laws which permit it to go unwhipped of justice tad for a time it seemed that the editors were on trial, before a jury of regular shysters. Y r. i I ?. Stanford, Ky.. February 5, 188 W. P. WALTON. The severe criticism of Attorney General G trlii nil for accepting, while he was a Senator and continuing to bold after hia appointment as chief Itir officer of the GoTernment, a Urge cumber of shares iu the Fan Electric Telephone Company li jaBtand well deserved. The acceptance by legislators and public officers of ''blocks of stock," whether tney' prove in the enterprise, or tee channels in which they may be uaeful, has been made odious in this country, and tlw Attorney General ought to know it. Tne thing is after the order of the Credit Mobelier transaction, which mads odious evrry public man who engaged in it, and it seerm strange that sensible democrats at least have not profit ed by the experience.
