(2) Site gattg stovww. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY JULY 7. 1S85 c THE COST OF1XSECTS. If any foreign nation should dam age us to one-tenth the amount of the Ioes inflicted upon us by our insect pests YC should declare war upon it without any hesitation and go right to work to spend a hundred million dollars in building up a navy to pro tect our shores. But when foreign enemies in the form of destructive in sects invade our coasts and spread over our whole territory, we quietly submit to it and make no combined effort to destroy them and prevent their ravages. There is no other loss suffered by the people so great as this. The aggregate of the losses by fire and ship wreck does not reach that inflicted upon the country by pernicious insects. We have numer ous insurance companies and costly fire departments organized for our protection from fiie and a signal office to give warnings against storms for tho security of our shipping. CJ Site gaUjj IMtomu. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY JULY S. 18S5 A FREE 111 VEIL The Eastern Oregon journals are not behind in the advocacy of a free river. In a recent article in The Dalles Times-2founlainecr, in an swer to some remarks of tho Ore goniaii, the following eccurs: " The people of eastern Oregon for many years have been forced to pay the most exorbitant rates of freight to bring products to markets, because the portages of the Columbia river were directly under the control of one corporation. The people have requested that they be favored with small driblets out of an overflowing U.1S. treasury to make this river navigable for other boats than those stamped with a monopoly brand. Their requests have in a certain measure been heeded, and already over 800,000 have been expended in constructing locks at the Cascades. The wisest statesmen and the safest economist...
