The men who guide the city's des tinies met last night in regular ses sion. Timely topics were talked over some new measures discussed and many old ones resurrected. The real nightmare of the even ing was the Wenatchee avenue im provement scheme. Mr. Thompson, of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, presented a petition relative to this work, which was referred to the pro per committee. Want Another Cop. The question of increasing the po lice force by the addition of another man was discussed, and the police committee was instructed to investi gate the necessities of the case and report at the next meeting. The finance committee was asked to consider the matter of a sinking fund, and make recommendations at the next session of the council. An intoxicated man entered the Cunningham lodging house, seeking quarters—or trouble —it is not clear which. Anyway, he found the latter. Mr. Cunningham arrived about the time things were growing noisey, and threw the intruder out. The would be lodger made a pass at Mr. Cun ningham, the police say, hut missed him and struck his wife, who was standing near. June 14. —A jury of twelve of his peers has de clared Mayor Eugene E. Schraitz guilty of the crime of extortion as charged against him by the Oliver grand jury. The jury was out just one hour and thirty-five minutes. They elected Charles E. Capp fore man and at once proceeded to an informal ballot. This was cast ver bally and stood eleven for conviction and one for acquittal. Juror Burns, a shoemaker, cast the dissenting vote. Then the twelve men began a discussion of the evidence, which lasted for nearly an hour. It was a written ballot and was unanimous for conviction. On the wings of rumor spread the report: "Tha jury has reached a ver dict," and even before Judge Dunn" reached the synagogue, hurried thith er in an automobile, nearly a thous and men had gathered in Bush street and were clamoring at the doors to be let in. Juno —Seven- teen persons wer e injured in the wreck of the eastbound Oriental Lim ited on Che Great Northern railway, west of Palermo, this morning. Nine cars wer c plunged down a twenty foot embankment and all but the mail car were burned. Engineer James Longevan went down with the engine, but escaped injury. Fireman Nolan jumped and hurt his foot. The wreck was caused by a broken rail. The injured include L. J.
