CORRES3NDNCE - .tl To the Editor. . Sir,-As a witness to a' recent emer- b; gency at the hospital, i where there w were three seriously injured patients admitted at the same time, I won- P dered if the public were aware of the S( work entailed to the nursing staff at ei such times and if they knew just how p short of nursing staff our hospital s5 really is. The entire staff at the moment con- t sists of the matron, four sisters and two nursing assistants, who have to ii be prepared for any and many emer- v gencies when they arise. v The hospital must be staffed for 24 h hours per day, and to work the staff c in the three necessary shifts and al- t low a day and a half off per person a each week is rather a headache. r Let me give you an idea of the v work involved on the night I speak of: I The three patients admitted were in v a serious condition, all requiring im- I mediate and constant attention. It was read, and the chairman (Cmr. Davy) called on Comr. Briggs to re port on the recent deputation to the S.R. and W.S.C. Cmr. Briggs stated that he could make a report in a few-in fact, very few-words indeed. All the facts were placed at the deputation. Since 1939 efforts had been made to get the plan put into operation. What was said at the deputation had no effect what ever. In a few words, the deputation were told that the time-.was inoppor tune and to wait until things improv ed. To his' mind they had not im proved since 1939. What he did ob ject to was being told that the S.R. and W.R.C. may contemplate utilising Snob's Creek if the need be, for Eil don. Alexandra was apparently of very little consequence. The speaker was of opinion that the matter should be taken to the M...
