Jute Gamblings. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 31 October 1913

Jute Gamblings Gambling in juto has been denounced as tho cause of tlio suddon jump in raw juto values a month ago. A com parison has frequently been made (says "Capital") between "cotton future?" , in England and the "Bhitar Bazar" hero"; no such comparison is possible. Tho system known as "cotton futures'' is as follows:—For instance, should a spin ner, say, in the month of August, receive an order '5for cloth for delivery during January-June of the following year, ho goes to a firm who deals in, futures and ascertains tho price at which' lie can purchase cotton for that delivery, and if ho can mate a profit ho enters into contracts for the purchase of cotton and for tho sale of cloth for that period. A month before delivery of the cotton ho declares his intention either of accepting delivery^ of tho cot ton or taking or paying a difference and purchasing cotton elsewhere. Tiiis is most beneficial to trade and a system -, of "juto futures'.' such as this would obviato tho necessit...

THE HARASSED HOUSEWIFE. : - Witiy do women upset the establish-' • ed ofder o£ the home by shitting the.'-; furniture occasionally? Were you ever a harassed housewife, condemned . to live and move and have your being within the four walls of an ordinary - house, villa, or humpy; to polish the same old faded linoleums In each room on certain days, year in, year out; to spend a lifetime caring for the . Same old bite of furniture and furnish ings, and cooking the same old meals tor a conservative-appetited family? It will ease your rusty feelings- a bit after a year or so to put the sewing machine where the sofa, used to be, and vice versa; and get the paper bangers in for no other reason'than to stop the same old flowers on the parlor wall leering at you any longer. You might suggest that the furniture juggler should go abroad to seek var iety, but you'll usally find there's tho inarriage tie, or the tie of twine, or an assorted family, or something equally binding in the way. LADIES' LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 31 October 1913

LADIES' LETTER. By "Irene." The race carnival' lias brought out some feai'ful and wonderful toilettes, and extravagance in the way of modes is just, now reigning- supreme. It is saUl tlvat fashion has never been so absurd, but it was once thought just as silly to wear enormous sleeves and Eull skirts as it isi now to don gar ments which fit closely in every par ticular. Of coursa, now and then we come across a costume which should be expunged; but on the whole the dresses are remarkably pretty and graceful, and the Magyar mode permits of many varieties. The Melbourne Cup is looming in the near distance, and it is there that we will see some marvellous dressing. But the dresses will, for the main part, be replicas of thoss whicih are just now being sport ed in Melbourne, and, in fact, the same frocks generally do duty for the two occasions. The Law of Defamation PREMIER PROMISES AMEND MENT. When, the newspaper proprietor falls In defending an action for de famation, and does not pay tlie dam ages, the plaintiff, armed with a writ of execution, may legally walk into the newspaper office and confiscate the founts of type, the galley press, the chases, and other things that, were used in the circulation of the offending statement. This clause in the Defamatijon Act is one of the black beasts of the country news paper proprietor, and annuallyl and at other times, lie protests about it. On Wednesday the conference of the New South Wales Country Press As sociation passed a motion asking for amendment of the law in this regard; and in the afternoon they put the position to the State Premier, and was a matter for general considera tion, and the Government would be glad to receive concerning it the views of such a conference as t.liiB, of men with very wide-, experience.
