The North Australian. THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 1864. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian — 14 April 1864

%\t °§wi\ Australian. THURSDAY, APRIL 14. 1601. The present condition of our finaneial affairs is not remarkably favorable to public expenditure of any kind beyond what is required for the necessities of Government and the settlement of the country. The encouragement of the fine arts, inasmuch as it is a part of the education of the people, is an object that may well be kept in mind, bnt tioTi- to *nic iirsuitA7irarjce of tUfe puTrllc credit. We are compelled to borrow for our Railways ; our current expen diture is far in advance of our current income ; and before we make ourselves fine we must, at least, see that we are in a position to do so safely. If we arc to spend thirty or forty thousand pounds upon Parliament Houses, we shall have to borrow it ; for the general revenue cannot meet the ordinary expense of the State. If we are to borrow that Bum, we have to look at the source whence tbe debt is to be defrayed, — and before all, whether any such press ing necessity exists as to...
