Bendigo Mine Itobberics. Another Property Visited. .bor some weeks the Great Southern Gold-iniuing Com pany at Bendigo has been operating on highly payable dirt above the 930ft. level, and this no doubt proved the incentive for a gang of robbers to undertake an underground visit to that portion of the mine. O.n.theJease there are a number of shafts, and the mine manager (Mr W. Bolitho) has taken every precaution to see that these means of access were secured. However, on taking a walk round the lease on Sunday morning he was surprised to find that the bolt holding down one of the trap doors to a shaft about 150ft. west of the main shaft had been Tampered with, and recognis ing that the perpetrators of the outrage might still be un derground he reported the ? j.„ j.i ? i: ? rn„ ? j umtiui iAJ cue jjuiuje, j.u gufctiu against any descent in this particular shaft Mr Bolitho had taken out the first 30ft. of ladders, but this must have been known to the gang, for as soon as the trap-door...

Germany and Russia. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 4 April 1901

Germany and Russia. The speech of the Emperor William at the banquet given by the Alexander Regiment of Guards on Saturday night has provoked the German Dress, which has exnresserl grave dissatisfaction at His Majesty's remarks. The regiment has been named after the late Czar Alexander I., and His Majesty at- the dinner took occasion, in proposing the health of the present Czar, to say that if recent attempts to disturb the cordial relations between Ger many and Russia had been momentarily successful, the fault was not his (the Kaiser's). The Emperor William subse quently went on to refer to the position of the regiment itself audlie declared that the Guards would crush with their bayonets attempts at insub ordination in Berlin. It is this latter part of the address to which exception is in par ticular takenjoy the German press. I have received the following com munication from a valued correspon dent, who is distinguished in the musi cal world : — T) eab Deborah, — Quite recently X was asked who com posed ' Tannhauser,' so I thought it might be of interest to your readers to read a short sketch of the great com poser ana nis worxs, especially as hub time when the operas are the talk of the day. Both ' Tannhauser ' and ' Lohengrin ' are very popular just - now. ' In Mr Haweis' words, the 'Tann- hauset' and the ' Lohengrin' are the two first of the legenra-V dramas which serve to illustrate the Christian chivalry and religious aspirations of the middle ages in conflict, on the one side with the narrow ideals of Catho licism and on the other with the free instincts of human nature. ' Parsi fal' forms with them a great trilogy of Christian legends, as tlie Ring of the Pagan, Rhine and Norse legends. William Richard Wagner was bor...

Supposed Loss of the Federal. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 4 April 1901

Supposed Loss of the Federal. There have been no reports from Albany abi/ut the steamer Federal, arid hope of her being safe is now almost abandoned. The belt found on the beach was positively identified by Mrs Daniels, wife of George Daniels, chief cook, as that constantly worn by her husband. The farther information about the' wreckage enables i Mr Fullarton, manager of , M'llwraith, M'Eachran, andj Go,, to positively identify it' as belonging to the Federal. | In order to allay as far as possible anxiety about the vessel, the firm telegraphed to Albany asking for informstion as to the time the vessel, if still afloat, might be expected to reach there. The reply was that the Federal was scarcely due under any circum stances before Sunday 'or Mon day. Vessels arriving from the east all report much ad verse weather. A Gleam of Hope.
