CRICKET MATCH. PORTLAND V. EIGHTEEN OF SOUTH PORTLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 23 January 1877

CRICKET MATCH. PORTLAND I'. EIGHTEEN OF SOUTH PORTLAND. . A match was played on January 131th between ot, eleven of tile Portland Club and eighteen of South Portland. A great deal of interest was taken in the game. A large number of spectators were present, amlongst whom were a good sprinkling of the fair sex; lhad tile latter been antioipated, the club would, doubtless, have been better prepared , with accommodation for the ladies. The fence round the ground, which was only finished on Friday, wan seen to be a vast improvement, and set off the ground immeosely. Doubtless the other improvements contemplated by the enmmittee will also be proceeded with, although we learn fi om the Treasurer that the promised subscriptions are not coming ill as fast as be could nleis, and that the renriaisider of the weak must wait till he is in possession of funde. MAJOR LEARMONTH'S TROPHY. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 23 January 1877

MAJOR LEARMONTH'S TROPHY. The first competition for Major Lee-. month's trophy took .place on 18th inst., and resulted in the I'ortland team scoring the first win, beating IBe:fast and Warrnambool. The day was not a very favouroble one for good shooting, there being a considerable amounlt or mtrge, and a strong wind blowlng right across the range. So muck allowance had to be made that often the line of sight lhad to be taken off the target to secure a lhit by the marksmano. Great interest is taken in this contest, and our local men are natunrally proud of their victory. Within one month the second competition for the trophy will take place, and it is to be hoped that practise will be kept up and another victory achieved. AN ESCAPEID- LIONESS. (FrIO TUTI SEW rTonme VEIOtt TELEGRAPU, aey. 2) One-of the most interesting features of the menagerie at Barnum's iippodrumoa has been the cleaning one of the dens of the a.linals. Tho menagerie includes a number of lions, leopards, agere, Src. 'Iha method .ur, cleaning the. cages of thtuse ferocious beasts is a tlhrilling one. AGRICULTURE AND RAILWAY COMMUNICATION. (To the Editor of the Argus.) [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 23 January 1877

AGRICULTURE AND RAILWAY COMMUNIUATION. (To the Editor oJ the Argus.) Slrh,-Mr. Casey, in his essay on the land systems of South Australia and Victoria, states that the latter colony produces Insult. clent wheat for its own consumption, whilst the former, after satisfying its own require. ments, is able to export a surplus-which amounts to 4,non tco., per week during the year. Mr. Casey further states that of wheat there are four acres per head' of the popula tion cultivated lo South Australia as Against four-toulis of an acre in Victoria; that thl climate is better here than there,'the" rainfall is more regular in Victoria th?n ih' South Australia, and tile land is more proilutive.
