NELLIE'S ROMANCE. CHAPTER III. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 8 September 1870

rpLLIE'S ROMANCE." CHAPTER III. Maggie Greton enjoyed the idea Amazingly, and -was quite willing to 'help. She was her own mistress, and could do as she liked. She had no mother; and her father was a book worm, and did not trouble much about what went on around him, which was convenient. ! The morning came, and Nellie went round to Maggie's early. She kissed them all rery affectionately before she left home. She felt frightfully wicked; but she thought of old BrownloMr, and could not repent.. "There (they are, Nellie," said Maggie as a brougham with Egerton and Welsh came round the corner; and they got in, and all four went to church together, which, of course, was not, etiquette; but that could, not be studied in an elopement. Nellie was uncommonly grave. " Believe you are frightened, Nell," whispered Maggie, who had been doing a side flirtation with Welsh, and seemed to enjoyed it. " Well, you see, I never was a bride before,'' she »aid slowly, which was true. " It is not the leas...

AWFUL MURDER AT SANDRIDGE. COMMITTAL FOR TRIAL OF THE MURDERER. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 8 September 1870

AWFUL MURDER AT SAND- RIDGE. COMMITTAL FOR TRIAL OF THE MURDERER. On Monday evening, Sandridge was thrown into an unwonted excitement   by the report - subsequently found to be but too fatally true - that a man named Elton had murdered a little child at the Fisherman's Bend on the Yarra. At the inquest on Tuesday the following evidence was taken - The mother of the murdered child de- posed that her name was Alicia Sath, and was the wife of the prisoner, Edward Marwood Elton. I live at Sandridge. Deceased was my illegiti- mate son. His name was Thomas Henry Darbyshire, and was two years and seven months old. Since his birth I have been married. For the last week he has been living in Melbourne, coming home to his meals daily. I have been living with Mrs. Jackson, at Station-place, Sandridge. He came home yesterday, about 2 o'clock, from town. He had no dinner. He was quite sober and low-spirited. He ap- peared so on account of having nothing to do. He had a cup of tea, a...

THE CRACKSMAN'S CHECKMATE. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 22 September 1870

THE CRAOKSMArS CHECKMATE, She listened intently. Yes; she was sure she heard somebody in the next room-a step that moved stealth ily about; a noise as of ?woodwork skilfully and cautiously forced, open. One moment she felt frightened. Then her courage came back the higher for its interruption She could have escaped from her own room into the passage ea»y enough, and so alarmed the house; but when she recollected that its fighting garrison consisted only of an [infirm old butler -for the footman was absent on leave -there seemed little to be gained by such a proceeding, if violence or rob bery was really intended. Besides, she rather scorned the idea of summon ing assistance till she had ascertained the amount of danger. So she blew her candle out, crept to the door of the little room, and laid her hand noiselessly on its lock. Softly as she turned itj gently as she pushed the door back-on its hinges inch by inch, she _did not succeed in entering unobserved. The light of a shaded lan...
