Dairying in the State Schools. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 March 1904

Dairying in the State Schools. The new dairy expert con-: ceives that a great deal of good' may bt£ done in educating in dairy f principles the older: scholais of the country schools, who are not only very often the milk hands' of to-day, but will be the dairymen of the future.' He has consequently written a short article, in plain language, and on practical lines, setting out some of the principles of dairying, laying ; stress on the necessity of keep- ? ing the milk clean and cool. ? and explaining the causes which led to sounies.*-*. Per- j sonal cleanliness and cleanH- j ness in the surroundings are ? also touched upon, and by fol- ; lowing the directions great ? good should result. The article; will be struck off in thousands, , and supplies ivill be sent to the \ schools for distribution. Work for the Unemployed. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 March 1904

Work for the Unemployed. Two sets of men, being the first selection from among the unemployed, will start to-day (says Tuesday's ' Courier'), one for Warwick and the other for Palmwoods. An over seer in each case is on the ground to advise on tne pro- ; bable cost of clearing the land, i It is probable that each lot of \ men will be split up into three j gangs of five men each, who ; will be asked to tender to the ! overseer for clearing the laud, - and if the work can be done at ? a t-rice at which the land can ! be sold afterwards they will be j set to work at once. When ! the clearinghas been completed | the land will be cut up into small farms and sold to recoup the expenses incurred. The system will be further extended j as opportunity offers. The j principle adopted is that of the j ' bntty-gaug'— 'butty' sigui- j fying mates. These men formed parties, with one man selected as head tu deal with the overseer 011 behalf of the others. Farming Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 March 1904

Farming Notes. Cream Mill not separate from milk if it is constantly subjected to shaking or jarring. Sweet cream just removed from the milk does not churn as rapidly as older cream that has been ripened. is liable to be so little friction the butter will never come. Milk is more sensitive in receiving and more tenacious in holding impurities than water. Milk must be property cooled and its temperature kept regu lar either by natural or artificial means. j The dairyman who knows how to feed and care for his cows knows two very Import ant items in dairying.. Cotton seed meal gives rich milk, but is too nutritious to be used alone, and it colours the butter highly. A churn should not be filled to more than two-thirds oi* its ( capacity, so as to lea\re room for agitating the cream. Churning sit too high a tem perature or churning too long will produce greasy batter in wmen tne grain is injured. j Never use the hsinds to j butter, as the less hand contact the butter gets the better; al...

A New Sugar Plant. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 March 1904

A New Sugar Plant. What may turn out to be nhe great sugar producing plant of the future has been found in South America, its discoverer is the Director of the Agricultural In:5ti tute of Ascunsion, who. as a result of careful experiments, announces that it yields a su»ar 20 to -?o t'tnes as sweet as the ordinary cane or beet sugar. Furthermore it is equally available for domestic s.nd i other uses — a point of importance j when it is considered thatsomethmg j like 100 diftereHt sugars are already | known to chemists, and that nearly i all of them are worthless comnier- j eially. The new plant is a dwarfish j shrub, only eight or twelve inches ! high, aad its scientific name is f Eupatorium Reebandium. One ad- j vantage of the sugar obtained is that of common cane sugar. Thus a small box ot it will take the place of a barrel of ordinary sugar in the future house- wife's pantry, and fair-sized sugar bowl will easily contain enough to last a large family for a full- week.
