Tup Government stated in reply to questions put to them in tho House last week, by Mr, Snttor, for our lion, member Mr. Phelps, that thoy intended extending the telegraph line from Hay £--? Booligal if., the parties bene fitted by it would' 'guarrtnteb firo: per cent, per annum on' the cost of extension. They also said, in reply to tho same lion, member that no application had ev;er been made for a bridgo over' the; Murrumbidgeo at Balranald. i We are not about to find fault with the de termination of the Government : to continue tho telegraph wire from this town to Booli gal, but we certainly: think, that the imposi tion of the terms in question will prevent the residents of that town from enjoying tbo oonvohicnce of telegraph communication. It would doubtless, bo a very, foolish thing for tlie- , Government to expend tho public, money in a way that would be un're munerative nnd uiibeneficialj and they are acting - wisely in first securing a paying per contago on tho cost of making...

IMPURE WATER. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 7 July 1875

IMPURE WATER. (From the Agricultural Gazette.') It is a trite saying among practical patho logists that the principal causes of disease are to be found in tho air which an animal breathes, the food which it consumes, or the water winch it drinks. Most competent in quirers in conducting an mvestieation intp the origin of an outbreak of disease among stock arc accustomed to boar this maxim iii mind during the course of their researches. : A question which, was asked a short time ago by an owner of 'grass park land,' loads us to consider the subject, of contaminated water in relation to the causation of disease. First we may state that there is strong and cumulative evidence in favor of the coaition that water contaminated with organic matter derived from sewage, or from any other source, is capable of causing serious distur bance in tho organism of animals which par tako of it. Outbreaks of blood diseases, as splenic apoplexy, and other forms of blood poisoning, havo been traced to th...

As 1 hope to make my appeal to tlio peo ple of IJay and tho Elcctorato of.Balranald in a very short time, will you allow mo to suggest that it would greatly encourage my exertions, and further my scheme if a pro visional committee, could be. formed in tho moanwhilo for collecting subscriptions in the same way as they are being now collected in the districts ot the Hume and the Murray, Thero is nothing so successful as success, and if I could announce on the opening of my proceedings that a certain sum had already been collected, it would add considerable force to my appeal. I append the form of proposal submitted at Albury, Corowa, and Deniliquin, and unani mously adopted by public meetings in those towns. I am, &c„ ...

MELBOURNE. July 3, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 7 July 1875

melbottrn-r' (FROM OUR OWN CORKEBrOXDHNT.1! Julv a. iR7r,. There has been nothing exciting in Parliament since my last, except a little bit of gossip between several members nnd the Postmaster-General, about tho In quiry now going on.nt Kew Asylum. Mr Lalor and tho gigantic Mr JI 'Kean had a sparring match about the aflnir without doing any damage to cither side, bevond raising a laugh at each others' expense. Tlio appeal of O'Fcrrall against the sentence passed mi linn for embezzling the public funds during the time ho was, m the Land ' Office, was heard before the full court last week. The prisoner was represented by Messrs Ireland and Molesworth, but failed to prove that he was not legally, guilty of the crimes imputed to hint, and for which lie' was sentenced to nine years' incarceration. The. point on which his counsel relied was that no proof of his appointment existed, therefore he was not guilty of embezzlement. Tills was over-ruled by the court, and the sentence remains goo...
