SPIRIT OF THE PRESS. THE GREAT EASTERN. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 11 August 1857

SPIRIT OF THE PRESS. THE GREAT EASTERN. (From tlit Timci, April 18.) Among -the pttsnions which belong to hnmani natui-e we may recognise what may be called a passion for size. Those primitive works officfton; which feed the chi)dinh imaj;iiiu.lioii unneal .serf boldly to this passion. They go strsiplit to the1 point, and crente without ceremony men, houses, and linns ten times bigger than aclnnl men, real house!), nnd live lions. But this in not the only quarter in which this apueal is made. Science, -with all its gravity, copies fiction here, and nppeals to the I same passion exactly as the childish fairy tale did. What single ingredient in astronomy, for example, ' tells more in creating a taste for that science than the enormous distanced in which it abounds ? The i figures which represent the distances of heavenly ' bodies from us, or the speed with which electricity travels, have the same fascination for the (scientific I that the numbers in the banker's book lmve for the 1 co...

COLONIAL EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 11 August 1857

'COLONIAI, EXTRACTS. Arrival or Veno re Victobu. — We arc happy to be enabled to state that the New South Wales cham pion arrived here in the steamer London safely yes terday afternoon, under charge of Higgrrson, Siis trainer and rider. The passage was an exceedingly favourable em', the sea having been like a mill-pond nil the way from Port Jackson. The horse looks will, having plenty of flesh, and looking -very full of life. So carefully was his box padded that ha shown hut one mark of his close confinement, a very Blight rub on the off hip. Having travelled nmidsliips, Veno had the advantage of the wurmth from the furnaces ; and Higgerson status that the vessel seems to have been made on purpose for equine travel, for she docs not roll in tlie least. So far, then, our New South Wales friends have reason to congratulate themselves : and we honestly assert that thu Victorian party. will rejoice equally as they that the odds are even as yet in health and sound ness. BRITISH EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 11 August 1857

BRITISH EXTRACTS. Akovtmous Writing. — There is no reason why a patriot should always be a martyr. A rery g-ood and great divine, who has just passed away from us, writes amusingly :— ' I love liberty ; but hope it can be so managed that I may have good dinners, fine linen. &c, for the rest of my life. I am too old to fisht or ton suffer.' This was a rery frank con fession, but it is full of plain, homely g-ood sense. The more helps, therefore, we can find to protect such lovers of liberty in time of peril the better, or liberty may chance to keep few friends. Now, an admirable device to preserve them in good heart is the i ight of anonymous writing. It is the principal point, indeed, in which our press differs from that of despotic countries. It is the Tery essence of a fix*e and useful press. It permits men to write when they would fear to speak. Anonymous writing is a surer guarantee against injustice And oppression than any form of government could be. ' Even the most li...
