The Daily News. SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 17 March 1883

SATURDAY^ MARCH 17, 1883. Everyone . now knows for; wHat'puy.7 j)o'siB the Legislative Corincil has i been: called together. ' It appears that Ilis Excellency the Administrator has discovered that all 'the requirements of the law : were not fulfilled when Messrs. . Fairbairn and Foss were gazetted, to the appointments they now hold, and that consequently the sen tences they have now passed upon native culprits are illegal, as a- mis take was made in. their appointments .in, limine. The Council has therefore been very propeily summoned to con sider what is to be done in the matter —to amend the deficiency. What is to be! done? that is. the question. And! we| fee! sure that His Excellency must feel himself tp be under a great ob ligjation to that daily bantling of the Berdld} yclept the Morning Herald, ior{ the advice it has, out of the omni potent plenitude of its wonderous wis doin, been pleased to give him upon this point. THE VOLUNTEERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 19 March 1883

THE VOLUNTEERS. Sir, — I notice in Saturday's Daily News the orders of the Inspecting Field Officer of . Volunteers for a 'field day' at Guildford on Easter Tuesday, March 27. I venture to point out the desirability of, for the present at all events, postponing the carry ing out of this order. It will como rather hard on many of the. young mechanics and tradesmen, who maiuly compose the Volun teer Force of Perth, Frenmntle, and I Guildford if they are called upon to ! sacrifice a half-day on Tuesday for Volun ; teei-ing. ' Good Friday will be a public I holiday; there are races and picnics. on : Easter Monday, which will of course be kept as another holiday ; and now we are called ; upon to make the next day, Tuesday, a partial holiday. Monday being a general holiday doubtless the stores will reuinin open ail day Tuesday, which again is another good reascn for postponing the field clay, as many store assistants are also members of Volunteer corps, and consequently though ? willing w...

STRAITS AND CHINA MARKETS. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 19 March 1883

STRAITS AND CHINA MARKETS. The following is Messrs. Behn Meyer & Co.'s last Circular, of date February 19: — Since issue of our last report, dated 22nd .Tn.nun.rv. business in sreneral has been in terfered with by preparations for and festivities during the Chinese New Year, and, consequently, very little has been done in all branches of our trade. The sandal wood market continues quiet and no trans actions are reported; our quotation being still nominal $3'25 per picul of 10 logs. The Actoaa, from Champion Bay, has not yet put in appearance, and so far no ac ceptable offer has bee made for her cargo, but as our market is cleared, with the ex ception of about 100 tons of inferior wood, ex Eliza Blanche, it is possible that on her arrival buyers will come forward with higher offers — the more so as it is expected that in about two months hence the demand at Shanghai will have increased. There is no demand for roots, and none are offering j we quote nominally $3 at $3*25 per p...

"To the Editor of the Colonies and India. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 19 March 1883

'To the Editor of the Colonies and India. ' Sib, — The sooner in my opinion that ? Australia, the Cape and Natal and West Indies enter the Postal Union the better, not only for the Colonies, but for the Mother-country and the rest of the world. A railway ought to be made from King George's Sound, in AVestern Australia, to Adelaide, and from there to Melbourne, ; Sydney, and Brisbane. This would be a better overland route than Port Darwin, ? and it would be a quicker and shorter sea voyage route than vtd New York and San Francisco, and less time for the mails ; he sides, the area that the railway would cut through from King George's Sound to Adelaide is good land, and situable for European colonisation. Western Australia wants development, surveying, and explor ing, and owing to its proximity to Europe, - it ought to he the firsb of the Australasian Colonies instead of the last. The system, of nomination for emigrants requires aboli tion and assisted free passages put in its place. E...
