THE SHOW OF SHEEP AT ARMIDALE. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

THE SHOW OV SHEEP AT ARMIDALE. THE exhibition (under the Pastoral and Agricul tural Society of New England) of unshorn sheep, as advertised, ame off on last Thursday week, in Mr. Starr's paddock, on tbe hill N. of Armidale Creek. Fortunately the weather wag favorable, there being an E. wind, with a clouded ekj, and thus there was an abnencn of the excessive heat which had previously been the rule, followed every evening oy a thunder storm, deluging the ground. But from some creeks being still up, a number of the sheep that were on the ground had to swim on their way ; end we have no doubt that under more favourable circumstance* the exhibits wsuld bare been multiplied. Yet there waa little to complain of on this score, the chow of sheep being very good. There wa« scarcely so much variety as at the last exhibition, but the greater number of the ihoep were Brat-class of their own several kinds. Messrs. Dangar Brothers were awarded five prizeaj Mr. John Fletcher, fours Mr. O. W. Marsh,...

PARKES PORTRAIT. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

PARKES' PORTRAIT. Ibgbv are no pleasures without some alight admix* lure of pain, no sweets without some tincture of bitterness, no triumphs without some humiliating alloy. The grand conquest of religious intolerance in Sydney is an evidence of the fact. The victory is decisive, final, complete intoxicatingly splendid, but the victors have a regret; Parkes and Buchanan are the bitter drops to their cup of sweetness. Purkea and Buchanan ere the men who, elevated for the present as the champions of tbe liberal partyt and victorious as suoh, are as blights upon their joy. One cannot state any very clear objections ? against Parkes save that he u a humbug, and. .is more full of big words than 'sound ideas. He baa novae respectability, no doubt, though its amount would scarcely carry him into the foremeat ranks of society, but he haB such a tremendous power of humbugging the people that we are not sure he will ever meet the fata of other public men, and be even temporarily unpopular. His...

IMPOUNDING BILL OF 1869. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 22 January 1870

IMPOUNDING BILL OF 1869. The abrupt termination of the last session of parliament prevented the passing of a much, needed and Iiigb'y important measure, 'A Bill to regulute the Impounding of Stock,' which was introduced into the Legislative; Council by the Hon. Robert Owen, the repre sentative of the Government in that Chamber. If it had been thought a 'visable to make regulations, as has been done in the case of other measures, giving directions for carrying out the daiies of which it is principally made tip, this bill might have been put into one third its present sice, It was, however, con flittered more satisfactory to incorporate these details at length in the Bill ; and the arrange ment of the different provisions under distinct heads will obviate any inconvenience which it might otherwise cause, and render reference ?easy. An important feature in this Bill is the different spirit in which it has been framed. In the present Impounding Act, a strong bias is shown in favor of th...

THE REVENUE. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 22 January 1870

?.,.-. THE REVENUE. The statement of the quarter's revunue, pub lished yesterday, furnishes good ground for congratulation. The increase in the receipts for the' last -quarter of 1869, compared with the corresponding quarter of 1.868, is£6O,810 19s. 10d., or about one-eleventh of the whole income of the last quarter of 1868. This rate «f increase in revenue happily confirms the confidence expressed by the Treasurer, that the country could safely dispense with ad valorem duties and the postal charge on newspapers, if only proper economy were exercised ? and the nett increase above men lioned has been realised notwithstanding the falling off in the Customs receipts by £7200, This decrease is chiefly in the. nd valorem duties sttJ the Murray River castoms.' There is besides the above a large falling off in the duty on spirits distilled in. the colony',,' For tbe land revenue there is ^increase of nearly .£24,000, of which 422,5^6 is under the head of land sales, and £2793'i»' the -incr...
