Already several of the lead ii'' hotels are full, and haye been compelled to decline applications for accommodation. Only two stories in which thero is no love interest have ever lived. ,,. These arc 'Robinson Crusoe' and 'Macbeth,' was the pronouncement of a recent lecturer on the gentle art of making love. FROM THE BULLETIN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 4 April 1906

FROM THEfBULLETIN. Under the skilful guidance of the reigning Ministry the X.S.W. Lands Scandals gradually work to their desired end. Porhaps by some chance the proceedings in S'Africa against W. N. Willis will actually succeed in bringing that much-desired gentleman back to Australia. But in view of what has passed it doesn't seem v^ry likely. And, failing that, thi-K is a practical end to- the Lands In quiry, and the country can grin arid bear its loss of .£.500,000 or so, without even the consolation of knowing that there has been any warning registered against such evil-doing iu the future. No other end could have been reasonably hoped for when Parliament in sisted on leaving the investigation in the hands of the present Minis try. The only course promising satisfaction was a full and merci less inquiry, but such an inquiry would have shown that certain members, of the State Ministry were concerned in the scandals — not of necessity criminally con cerned, but in some.caaes not c...

ODDS AND ENDS [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 4 April 1906

ODDS AND ENDS It is now pretty well understood that the Federal Parliament will not assemble until June. Berinndan women are noted for their line complexions. This is said to be partly due to the fact that they eat plentifully of onions. Mr. Hollbigg, aged 35, was killed by lightning near Grafton. His body was much mutilated. A boat near which he was standing was shattered. ':;. ? The Government Architect and others have visited Yass with a view of reporting ilpon the place as a site for the Federal Capital in con nection with the Barren Jack re servoir scheme. According to a St. Petersburg re port, a Commission of Inquiry has found that Port Arthur might have been held by the Russians for an other two'months. General Stoeasel is said to have been censured . for surrendering without the know ledge and concurrence of any of his officers. It is reported in Bloemfontein that Boer leaders in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony recently met and discussed the question of a closer union....

The "Kentuckians," [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 4 April 1906

The 'Kentiickians.' . ♦ - 1 A case heard at the Newtown Police Court on Monday last; when two men were heavily fined for sly-, grog selling, presented some novel, and interesting features. It is re cognised that the new Liquor Act i« nn imnorfect measure, since, while it prohibits the purchase of stimulants on Sunday, it makes no provision for notifying the craving which occurs then as at other times. To remedy this defect, a number of the residents of Erskinevillo banded themselves together under the title of a 'Kentucky' — a name which the presiding magistrate at. first erroneously imagined to have some connection with- theology. The 'Kentiickians' aro'gentlemen who look ahaad, and some days previ ously make arrangements for satis fying the thirst which they are as sured will overtake them on the Sunday. This laudable effort was inaugurated on modern socialistic principles. , A common fund for the purchnso of beer was opened, into which the well-to-do put as much as half-a-crown a...

The North Coast Boom and the Dairying Industry. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 4 April 1906

The Horth Coast Boom and the Dairying Industry. The Budget is growing weary of tho man who. runs about the coun try and returns 'with glowing ac counts, Ac, Ac.' There's a lot of him just now running to and from the North Coast and Queensland. None can deny that the land skirt ing the Northern Rivers is won derfully fertile, and the paspalum ? is probably as high as' the toprail of the fence, and the ' rainfall an eye-opener. It is also no uncom mon thing to see a dairy herd average £11 per head at avction, and leased land bring 24s an acre; while for a man to double his money on the purchase of a farm ie quite a common thing. By. the way, the Budget has seen land in Melbourne, suburbs bought for .£190. an acre and ? s61d the next week or so at auction ' for £600; That was in the days of 'Jimmy' Munro and Dayies (who lost the. rnaco or some Parliamentary bauble'). ?' As You Like It. 'I must have liberty ? Wltlinl ns largu a charter us tho wind.
