ZIONIST CONFERENCE. ? ^ ? MORNING SITTING. THE WELCOME TO THE DELIGATES. (Continued.) The first Zionist Conference was held on Sunday morning last at Clerkenwell Town Hall. Col. Goldsmid took the chair at 10 a.m. M'r. Herbert Bentwich, Chairman of die Conference Committee, was welcomed with a round of applause. He said : To-morrow we celebrate the Fast of Esther. As nearly as possible twenty four centuries ago, on this very day, a message was sent from one Mordecai, of the King's Gate, in the capital bE Persia, to Esther, the Jewish Queen, which comes home to us almost as a personal appeal in the present juncture ; when we alone live in this King's house of Freedom, while all our brethren, from one end to the other, are banned and prescribed as effectually as ever they were in those far-off ages. What was that message : — ' Think not to thyself that thou shalt escape in the King's house more than all the Jews, for who knoweth but that thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as ...
RUSSIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
RUSSIA. Bussia is the only one among the great countries of Europe that continues to have an anti-Semitic Government.. In other lands anti Jewish feeling is a matter of popular passion which the respective Governments endeavour to suppress or control. In the empire of the Tsar, on the contrary, the persecution of the Jews is undertaken by the ruling powers. A question has arisen in the Minisiry of Education whether dentists of the Jewish faith may enter the service of the State. A Jewish dent-ist had solicited an appointment in a Gymnasium, and on the matter being referred by the Education Department to the Ministry of the interior the latter gave a reply in the negative. An important question affecting the right of residence of a large category of Jews will come before the Senate for consideration in the ensuing month. An old regulation permits those Jews who have been for at least ten years members of the First Guild to live in any part of Russia Such Jews, affcor obtaining this r...

OUR PERTH LETTER. Perth, West Australia, May, 4th 1898. The movement for the establishment of the Children's Hospital for West Australia has elicited more than ordinary interest in Jewish quarters. From its inception the Rev D. I. Freedman, B. A., has closely mdentifiei himself with the cause, and has been elected President of the Committee, The movement has become the most popular ever started in the Colony. On Easter Monday an old English Fayre in aid of the building funds, was opened by His Excellency the Governor, who was received by Mr. 0. Moore and the Rev. D. I. Freedman. Master B. Herman, attired as a page of honour, presented the Governor with the freedom of the Fayre in the shape of a golden key, The great part the Jewish ladies and gentlemen have taken in this bazaar has brought forth many encomiums from the out side public. There were two Jewish stalls. The sweet stall was presided over by Mrs. J. H. Joseph (wife of the Treasurer of the Perth congregation) and the doll s...
LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
LIFE. This world's a hollow bubble, Don't you know ; Just a painted bit of trouble, Don't j ou know, We come to earth to cryy We grow older and we sigh, . Older still and then we die. Don't you know. And it's such a horrid mix, Don't you know, Business, love and politics, 1'on't you know ; . Clubs and parties, cliques and sets, Fashions, follies, sins, regrets Struggles, straggles, cigarettes, Don't you know. And we worry through each day, Don't you know ; . ? In a sort of kind of way, Don't you know ; And its all so flat and dead, Breakfast, luncheon, dinner, bed That is life when all is said, Don't, you know. Business, simply trade, Don't you know ; Something's lost and somethings made, Don't you know ; We woriy and we mope, And we place our highest hope On, perhaps, the price of soap. Don't you know. Politics, just a lark, Doa't you know ; A mere nightmare in the dark, Don't you know. Vou perspire^ all day and night, And then aifer all the fight Why, perhaps the wrong man's right...
SUBSCRIPTION, 10s. 6d. PER YEAR. FRIDAY, MAY 13TH, 1898. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
SUBSCRIPTION. 10s. 6d. PER YEAR. FRIDAY, MAY 13th, 1898. Tne community seems to have learned that to prevent disintegration, and to command success, a great deal more of our muchheard of unity requires active manifestation. Only j a few years ago the Jewish Education Board decided to enlist the assistance of the ladies in arranging an Annual Ball, in aid of the Insti tutions Fund. A strong committee, and the active co-operation of the leading members of the community made the function a pronounced success. The Chief Rabbi, the Rev. A. B. Davis, in speaking of the result some time ago stated it gave him much pleasure to find the opportunity was freely availed of by our people to meet soqi ally and ivgretted more frequent opportunities were not available Evidently encouraged to keep the good work1 moving on, another function is being arranged by the Com mittee of the Baron de Hirscli Memorial Aid Society, and the objects for which the Society is labouring and the good it is doing make...
Christian Money-Lenders. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
Christian Money- Lenders. A. writer in the ' London Referee,' discus sing the usury disclosures, opines that bad as the Jewish. money-lenders in many cases are, the Christian money-lender is generally worse. ' In the ecu se of a long and varied career, I have,' . he says, 'come across a good many specimens of both classes, and I have been behind the scenes in more than one case where tho insanity of extravagance h?s brought the bearer of a' great' name to ruin — alas ! in some instances to a miserable end. So far as my knowledge goes, the Christian spider has gene rally been far more merciless to the poor little fly ilian the Jewish spider. I have not any sentimental regard for the Jewish money lender. Far from it, But at the same time I cannot see that he is any worse than his Christian riva\ and I know several instances in wliice he was a great deal belter, and cer tainly infinitely more charitable.'7 Far be it from -us to offer any 'defence of the Jewish money lendtr, as to whose...

Rarely, if ever, have the obsequies of a private individual in Berlin been attended with so many marks of distinction The house of mourning, Wilhelms Platz F., was thronged with a dense crowd, who gazed eagerly at the never endiug stream of Royal, official and private carriages, and at the immense quantities of][wreaths and and other floral offerings, which were continually brought. The halls, staircase and the drawing rooms, in which the funeral service was held says the 'Jewish Times and Observer ' were draped in black and crape hangings. The nearest relatives of the deceased and a most distinguished assembly were gathered round the plain conffin. His excellenry Dr. von Lucunas, General-Adjutant Count Lehndorff and Count Hulsen Haesler represented the Emperor ; the Empress Frede rick sent Freiherr von Seckendorff, who laid a lovely wreath of violets ...

A Russian View of Zola's Trial. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
A Russian View of Zola's Trial. It is henceforth an historical fact that generals in active service have come to the . assize court and thrown their sabres into the - scales of justice in order to terrorize a French, jury. Their object was to get the verdict against Dreyfus-.-. confirmed, and to make1. Estherhazy appear innocent. We are far from thinking that international difficulties miffht have arisen if the ' secret documents' of the military had divulged. .The French Government have no cause to complain of its staff generals. They have played, the part imposed on them very well.. It would, however, have been more - honorable for the Government and for them if recourse had been had to- more honest means of getting out of this uwp&sse.-AmerieanLyaetiU Esfcerhazy has also swallowed the infamy of Picquart's refusal to meet him on the field of honour. He says he has been advised by high authority to leave his horswhip at home, and now he can walk through the world as the wor...
The "Intense" Frenchman. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
The 'Intense' Frenchman. There are supposed to be about 100,000 Jews in France, ia a total population of 39,000,000. That millions of people who on Other subjects are intelligent should give them selves up to rage against 100,000, is to be ex plained only by remembering that the Jews in France are the subjects of religious and racial antipathy, and of both antipathies combined ; and moreover, that this ebullition against the Jews is one of those periodical outbursts in France, in the name of patriotism — the fruit of a spirit that has deoended from the Revolution, When suspicion of treachery to the principles and purposes* of the Revolution drove the whole nation to frenzy and gave impulse to the armies that overran Europe from Cadiz to Moscow, Again, this fury against the Jews is akin to the fury against the Jesuits in France fifty years ago, which took form in legislation for suppression or expulsion of the order. ' Le Juif Errant,' which is still sold all over the World both in t...
The Jews in Greece. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 May 1898
The Jews in Greece. A solenin Te Deum was sung in all the Synagogues of the kingdom for the fortunate escape of our Sovereign King George is very popular amongst Jews, and his feeling towards them, like those of his father of Denmark, have always been extremely friendly. One day, in receiving the Chief Rabbi of Corfu, he told him one of the happiest days in his reign would be that on which a Jew should take his seat in the Chamber. Let us hope the wish of his Majesty will soon be accomplished. Hitherto Moslems have more reason to be satisfied than, we, for immediately on the annexation of Thessaly by Greece, Moslems had a representative of their own faith in the Parliament. The present Mohammedan deputy is acting at this moment as Mayor in Larrisa. — appointed by the Ottoman authorities. Seeing that he is free to go to Athens at any time, and vote on the Indemnity Loan, on which the evacuation of Thessaly depends, his position is indeed an anomoly. v

THE PLAGUEo The ' Bene Israelite ' Bombay, foi wards a litlio plan of the new hospital, and those interested in the good work, may see it at our offices.. Under dale March 31st it states that : The] Bene Israel Plague Hospital is now in full working order, Hospital as well as Segregation Camp and a Fever Ward are vaftAv. The necessity o f a communa hospital soon becomes apparent to every' one. lit is true that ours is not a large community, and it is said - that arrangements could have been made with the Government or other hospitals for separate wards. Every resource was tried and nothing could induce the people to remove their sick to other than communal hospitals. The Bene Israel community is a small one, when it sees other communities smaller than itself opened p'ague hospitals, they were quite justified in insisting to have a communal hospital - Besides, funeral rites could not be performed in general hospitals. Tahara could not be performed. From the general hospitals patients...
