Leongatha High School-I Annual Sports. OPENING OF SLOYD ROOM BY MR F. TATE. The management were favored with cool weather on the occasion of the holding of the annual sports on toe iuign zcnooi grounas on U Je 14th instant. There was a good attendance of the public, but the special train engaged to run from Foster was not as well patronised as expected. The council showed their enterprise in chartering a train to give residents along the line an opportunity to visit the school and see scholars at work. as well as attending the sports, but it did not meet with the success de served. The Director of Education (Mr F. Tate) and Mr Inspector Hansen were present, and oppor tuility was taken by the High School councillors to interview Mr Tate upon-the providing of a hostel for scholars at a distance desirous of attending the school, which would be the means --of increasing the attendance. In. order: that the State school might be. 'visited before com mencement of the programme.at the High School on Wednesday last,; Mr F. Tate, Director of Education, and Mr Hansen, in spector, arrived by train at Leon gatha the previous evening. The visitors were met at the school in the morning by Mr G. F. Michael, chairman of the school committee, and Mr E. Warriner, head teacher, and a few " wants " were placed before them. These were pro mised consideration, and will be attended to in due course. A -meeting was convened at Leongatha for Wednesday even .ing last by the shire president for the purpose of discussing the best method of systematic donations to the patriotic fund. A number of residents waited for 20 minutes in front of the Mechanics Institute for an authorised chairman, but as no leader attended, the meet ing lapsed. SPORT AND PASTIME. THE TURF. The Caulfield Cup, .which was run on Saturday, proved a great bettingrace, several horses being heavily, supported. Anna Oar lovna ruled favorite, her price :being 3 to 1 at barrier rise. St. Carwyne was next in demand at 7 to 2, and Uncle Sam was a firm third favorite at 9 to 2. There were 19 starters, Sylvanmore having been withdrawn. The - race was won in great style by Untle Sam who was -in a rear ward position until the- straight was reached, when he put in some brilliant-work, and he passed the winning post two and a half lengthsin front of Rathlea, with St. Carwyne third.
