CORRESPONDENCE. We do not necessarlly endorse the opinions of our correspondents. COLLINGWOOD FREE LIBRARY. TO THE EDITOR OF THE MERCURY. [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 24 June 1876

'CORRESPONDENCE. We do not necessarily endorso the opinions of our correspondents. SCOLLINGWOOD ' pFREbE LIBRARY. TO THE EDITOR OF THE MIROURY. .SR.--What are the committee of the Collingwood Free Library doing just now that, they. allow some' .A0 worth, of new books to lie on the, librarian's table uncut and unstamped, although they have been there, for the last two months or so? The library, if I understand aright, is supposed to be open for the benefit of those unfor. tunates that have not suffcient means to purchase books for themselves, or have not the accommodation, even if they wore the possessors, to keep them. The library was, when first opened, a great boon to the reading portion of the community, and any person who happened to drop in could pass a couple of hours very comfortably there, but, sir, things are altered now, the interest manifested by the committee has died away and those who used to'spend an hour there are able to .do so no longer, for with the exception of a ...

POETRY. LONGING. [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 24 June 1876

POETRY. LONGING. Or all the myriad moods of mind That through the soul came thronging, Which one was e'er so dear, so kind, . So beautiful as longing ? The thing we long for that we are, For one transcendent moment; Before the present, poor and bare, Can make its sneering comment. Still through our paltry care and strife Grows downthe wished ideal; Andj.onging moulds in clay, what life Carves in the marble real; To let the new life in, we know, Desire must ope the portal; Perhaps the longing to be so Helps make the soul immortal. Longing is God's fresh he.avenward will, With our poor eartbhvard striving; We quonoh'it that we may be still Content with merely livings But would we learn that heart's full scope Which we are hourly wronging, Our lives must climb from hope to hope, And realise one longing. Ahl I let us hope that to our praise Good God not only reckons The moments when we tread His ways, But when the spirit beckons. That some slight good is also wrought Beyond self-satisfa...

THE SISTER'S DREAM. [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 24 June 1876

THE SISTER'S DREAM. A anoTaER whom I lovod so well, Long years was lost, and I grow sad, The truth, of him, I glady tell: no was the purest joy I had. And oft I wondered what his fate Might be in some lone distant land: In sorrow I was doomed to wait, To grasp once more his loving hand. One midnight, wearied with despair. I slept, and dreamed of him alone- Of every danger I would dare To see him once again-my own I I murmured, "Come, oh! come to me! Why hast thou left me hero to pine? No other form I o'er can see So dear, so idolised, as thinol" I hoard a voice with silvery tone, Exolaim,--"Bohold, thy brother's near; Look, maiden ! is he not thine ownP 'Tis hol 'tie hol and hastening hereo !" The voice was hushed: my dream was o'er, As daylight dawned cloud.like it died; I woke--I saw, and Olaspod onoo more, My brother! standing by my side I "Mrs. Splinks," h?or.vod ia hbarder to the landlady of a Munson street caravan. sary, 'the eql t| adjustment of this estab. lishmont could lb:...

MIND IN PLANTS (SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN.) [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 24 June 1876

MIND IN PLANTS (scxIErIFIO AMEaIOAN.) As Dr. Forbes Winslow has remarked, vegetable life is so universally assumed to be, as a matter of course, unconscious, that it appears to many a more folly to doubt the correctness of the assumption. But, ho continues, lot a close observer and admirer of flowers watch carofllly their proceedings on the assumption that they not only fool but enjoy life, and he will be struck with the Immense array of facts which may be udduced In eup port of it.. Endow them hypothetically with consciousness, and they appear in a new and altogether different aspect. HEis conclusion is that they are undoubt edly in the same category in this respect with the lower forms of animal life, respecting which it is impossiblo to determine whether they have conscious ness or not. Dr. Lander Lindsay goes further, and regards, mind and all its essential or concomitant phenomena as common in various senses to plants, the lower animals, and man; and he backs his belief with a ...
