THE RECENT DROWNING CASE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 14 April 1892

TIHE RECENT DROWNING CASE. TO THE FDITOR OF TIHE CHIEONICLE. SIR,-I understand that a report is current in certain quarters, to the effect that I refused to read the burial service over the young man Rapken. recently found drowned in the Goulburn. Kindly allow me space to live an emphatic denial to the statement. The police were assured that the deceased was a Russian Jew, and they did not there fore invite any clergyman to officiate. Their action was endorsed by Mr. Rapken's brother. I have never yet refused Christian burial to anyone.-I am, &c., CHARLES H. BARNES.

THE GENERAL ELECTION. MR. M. K. M'KENZIE AT THE YEA SHIRE HALL. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 14 April 1892

TEE GENERAP ELECTION.? MR. rI. K. I'KENZIE AT THE YEA SHIRE HALL. Ma. M. K. )M'KENZIE delivered his second address at the Yea Shire Hall mn Friday evening. There were aboet 150 electors present, and the chair was occupied by Mr. T. S. Scale, J.P., President of the Shire. THE DEPRESSION AND HOW TO REMEDY IT. Mr. M'Kenzie said that the colony had reached a crisis in its history. Never before were ro many men looking for employment. Speculation was dead, enterprise was paralysed, and what was worse than all, con fidence was shaken both at home and abroad-confidence in the stability of our Government-contfidence in the stability of our financial institutions. In this state of things men of broad views, men able to take a comuprehensive view of social and political problems, should be returdled to Parlia ment-not men who could look after the little wants of their constituencies, but men who could diagnose the wants of the country and prescribe a remedy. T establishll peace upon a permane...

TO TIIE EDITOR OF TIlE CIIRONICLE. SIR,-In reading the report of the Yea Shire Council proceedings in the last issue of your journal under the above heading, I became curious on seeing the President (Councillor Scale) apologising for an irregu haritv. enecially an irregfar payment of .-?nlre money, as that gentleman prorrsee u to do everythilng in strict acc?rdance with the Local Governmenut Act The explanation of Councillor ScaLe appears very satisfactory, anl if true. I feel sure no ratepayer would or could cavil at the transaction; linut, M:r. Editor, what are the facts? I am credibly informed they are very different to Coun cillor Scale's story, and that the £5 to Mr. Sharp, and three guineas to the North :Estern Municipal Association, was actually Faid by cheque out of the Municipal Fu...
