THE COST OF NON-INTERVENTION. (Pall Mall [?] January 18.) [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 22 March 1878

THE COST OF NW-IlfTEltVEliTlOK. , / {Pall itali DuX/rt/Jaiman/ IS. I / PoflKACiousNESS is o i</ tiling and firmness ' another. A nation w ich hurries rashly into war upon trivial pi texte soon conics to trouble ; and no man ? 'ho cares for his coun- try would wish to see her rulers embark in such policy. But to intervene for the pur- pose of preventing wai or to counteract such conspiracies of connuei ; as despots still engage in, is often the nut; of a State in Great Britain's position ; a il if a partisan of the peace-at-any-pricc pi h'cy will review the events of the pasttw nty-five years he must see that be bas littl i cause to bc gratified with bis system. Ti c vacillating utterances ol English statcsmei in 1852-3 emboldened Nicholas to strike :he blow which led to that Crimean war wh ch we have lately beard % stigmatised as a mist kc. The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 22 March 1878

ROCKHAMPTON. l'RIDAY, M ARCH 22, 187S. IT is satisfactory to find that at length the vagaries of Si George Howell and Mr. Berry arc atti; cling attention in thc lirilish Parliament and Press. Victoria is establishing a p ccedcnl fraught with danger to the fir jre of constitutional government in Aus ralia, and if no notice were taken of tin proceeding by the Imperial authorise ;, and no interest in its consequences w ?re displayed by the British people, it Í 'auld be difficult for the most loyal A ustralian lo discover the advantage lik :ly to accrue from retaining the I nperial connection. None can more readily admit than wc do that under representative institutions the will of the pjeople, as expressed by their représentatives, must ultimately pre- vail ; but il is impossible to overrate the danger of sweepinb away those beneficial checks and counter-checks which were imposed by the framers of the constitu- tion for the purpjosc of preventing rash and ill-considered changes in fund...
