MEDICAL MEMS. Care of the Eyes. [Newspaper Article] — Foster Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 15 April 1915

MEDICAL MEMS. Care of the Eyes. A famous oculist onco declared thai the fashion of wearing spotted veils meant an extra thousand a year to him. Such veils are no longer in vogue, but the lace veils that some wo men affect are also very had for the eyes, besides making the wearer ap pear as if tattooed. To preserve the sight and beauty of tne eyes they should ho washed daily In a lotion made with a tea-spoonful of powdered boracic acid dissolved in half-a-pint of rose-water. Fill the eye-bath three parts with this and add sufiicient hot water to make It tepid. Salt and water—the salt thoroughly dissolved, of course—or very weak tea are also good lotions, but they should always be tepid, for cold water, though it may seem refreshing at the moment, is injurious to the cyea.

DE RESZKE AND THE AMATEUR. I Jean de ReszK'e in his Paris school -s very particular about the pupils ho ■ ccepts. Of coursc, ho has many ap i.'ic.-ints; to hare been a pupil of Do Reszke's Is in itself enough to get a singer a pood engagement, but he puts all would be pupils* through a se vere examination, at the end of which ho rejects about 9S out of every 100 of them. A certain aspiring amateur-recent ly returned from Paris. IIo sings lit tle, and, having saved some money, he determined to enter De Ueszko's school and make a second Caruso of himself. But now he is baclt, sadder, wiser, and worso off by the matter of well" over twenty pounds. Ho went to see De Reszke, sang a song or two, and In the sllonco that ensued said hope fully: "And now that you have heard me sing, M. De Iteszke, please tell me what you think my voice is best adapted to?" De Iteszke quietly answered: "Whispering." The amateur understood. His vo cal career closed in 6tlIIncss, ere It had actually commenced. ...
