LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. You will be glad to lienr that the tim ber crossing1 over the Sale Mornss is finished at last with the/exception of the painting of the hand railing-. A proper, nppionq1: has been constructed, so that people can now use the causeway without endangering their own necks or their horses legs —The bridge in course. of erection over the Thomson River is prog-jessing- favorably, and will, without doubt, be completed within the specified time, the 31st January next.—The Glengarry bridge stands some little chance of being- commenced on the expiration of the time allowed for its completion! It is to be hoped that the contractor for this work will, be fined in the full amount incurred for overtime, as he had ample opportunities for carrying on the works, which he has neglected. Messrs. Miles and McArdlo have already been fined for not completing- their con tracts within the given t'me; bo that, I suppose, Mr. Wsitson will have to submit to the same treatment. He certainly ...

PARLIAMENTARY REFORM. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Guardian — 31 December 1857

PARLIAMENTARY RE I FORM. | A bill is now before the Legis lative Assembly for increasing the number of members of the lower house and altering the Electoral districts. It is pro posed that the Assembly shall consist of ninety members, of whom twenty-one will represent the interests of Melbourne and its immediate vicinity, constitu ting nearly one-fourth of the assembly. Gipps Land (upper and lower districts) is to unite with Evelyn and Mornington in returning three members. It is probable that the bill will meet with opposition in its next stage and undergo some modification.^ "Were it to pass in 'its present form, the country districts would be entirely I swamped. Gipps Land for in ' stance in the place of returning, as at present, two members, both ; residents and acquainted with I the interests and wants of the ; electors, will form only a portion ! of a vast extent of country equal ito about one fifth of the colony.
