LINES ON A SKELETON. \ This poem a- Ai in the London Morning Ghro.iicli £y years ago. A reward of fifty guin /ailed to bring out its authorship nor is it yet known. Behold this ruin I 'Twas a skull, Once of elhcrial spirit fall; This narrow coll was Lifo's retreat, This space was Thought's mysterious scat. What beauteous visisns filled this spot, What dreams of pleasure long iorgot, Nor Hope, nor Lovo, nor Joy, nor Fear, Have left me trace of record here. Select Poetry Beneath this mouldering canopy Once shone the bright and busy eye ¦ But start not at the dismal void—If social Love that eye employed, If with no lawless fire it gleamed, But through thedews of kindness beamed, That eye shall be forever bright When stars and sua are suuk in night. Within this Kollow cavern hung The ready swift and tuneful tongue. If Falsehood's honey is disdained, And when it could not praise, was chained If bold in Virtue's cause it spoke, vet gentle Concord never broke ! This silent tongue sha...

The last joke at the espouse of the Fr- hch Society for the protection of Animals is lo the following effect: A countryman armed with an immense club presents himself before the President of the society and claims the first prize. He is asked to describe the act of humanity on which he founded his claim. " I saved the life of a wolf," replies the countryman, '•! might have killed him with this biudgeon;" and he swings 'he weapon in the air to the intense discomfiiure of the President. "But where was ihe wolf?" inquires the la'ler; "what, had he done to you?" " He hud just devoured my wife," was I he reply. The President reflects an instant, and then says; " My friend I am of the opinion that you have been sufficiently rewarded,"

'• I am rich enough," says Pope to Swift, "and can afford to give away a hundred pounds a year. I would not crawl upon the earth without doing good. I will enjoy the pleasure of what I give, by giving it alive, and seeing another enjoy it. When I die, 1 should be ashamed te leave enough for a monument, if a waning friend is above the ground." That speech of Pope is enough to immortalize him, independentl y of his philosophical verses- A countryman took his seat al, a tavern (able, opposite to a gentleman who was indulging in a bottle of wine. Supposing the wine to be common property, our unsophisticated country friend helped himself to it, with the gentleman's glass. "That's cool!" exclaimed the owner of the wine, indignantly. "Yes," replied the other; "I should think there was ice in it."

Harmonies of Providence. Abstract of a recent Lecture befnrc the Faculty and students of Alt. Union College, by Rev. John Tanner,,A. 31. By Harmonies of Providence I mean the marvelous accord and blending of God's attributes, manifesting his essential nature, love, in every department of his government. His name, God, signifies good: not derived from any specialattribule, but the centralization of all. In his adminisiraiions are apparent the harsher features of justice, yet ever in harmony with love and goodness. Though the theme is boundless, a few illustrations must, suffice. In every acre of fog there is enough electricity to destroy every living thing on that acre; but so masked by goodness, as to be discovered only b y scientific apparatus. The sea is formed of gases which, released from combination, would produce general conflagration; but they are restrained in ihe interests of goodness.. The atmosphere is composed -of elements easily transformable into poisonous, suffoca...
