Perpetrators of public violence challenge U.S. [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

Perpetrators of public violence challenge U.S. by Josh Getlin Los Angeles Times NEW YORK - A church. A high school. A daycare center. A hospital. A slock brokerage office. It there is any thread linking the recent wave of mass shootings in America, it is that they have all taken place in public spaces, areas long thought to be immune from the violence that typically erupts behind closed doors, or at least out of public view. The most recent horror, this week's shooting of seven people at a Baptist prayer service for teenagers in Fort Worth, Texas, illuminated once again the dark side of a culture that has spawned such violations of public space. Ideally, the common areas in which Americans come and go are the physical embodiment of an open society. But the sense of security which millions take for granted has been compromised by a wave of senseless shootings, one more horrific than the next. "It's become a hideous intrusion, a violation of the most fundamental guarantee we h...

Bradley, Gore virtually even in New Hampshire polling [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

Bradley, Gore virtually even in New Hampshire polling by Dan Balz The Washington Post CONCORD, N.H - Five months hefore the nation's first primary, former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley has virtually pulled even with Al Gore in New Hampshire, turning a once lopsided advantage for the Vice President into a fiercely competitive contest. Three recent polls confirm how much gloomier things are for Goretoday, with Bradley closing to within 4 to 7 percentage points of the frontrunner. What has happened in New I Hampshire is. in microcosm, the story of how the former basketball star has turned the competition for the Democratic nomination into a fight to the finish. When the presidential campaign began last winter. Gore seemeu to have most of the advantages here. He had the power of incumbency and the support of a president who, however controversial, was popular among Democratic activists and had an extensive network already in place here. Gore's New Democrat credentials, meanwhile,...

College drug users could lose financial aid [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

College drug users could lose financial aid by Adolfo Mendez TMS Campus WASHINGTON - Forget January 1, 2000. Apparently, a more important date for high school and college students could be July 1, 2000. Software experts are saying widespread chaos is unlikely to occur when computers roll their dates into the New Year, si) don't worry about Y2K. But there could be many students adversely affected by another date -- July I-- for an unrelated reason. That's when a federal law goes into effect that could strip students of their college financial aid for any drug conviction, no matter how minor. One conviction could mear a student would lose work-study and financial aid for a full school year. A Republican-controlled Congress approved the new provision, which is part of the Higher Education Act, and President Clinton signed it into law in October 1998. Drug policy reform advocates arcmobilizing on college campuses across the country to overturn the provision. "Twelve student gove...

College credit is sweeping the nation [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

College credit is sweeping the nation by Nikki Ronowski Daily Vidette Illinois State University College students across the country have been hit with the credit card craze. At almost every university across the nation, credit card companies have found the jackpot by setting up sign-up booths. They give away free T-shirts, calling cards, pens and pencils to apply for a card. Over 430 universities across the nation have banned credit tables, said Dennis Meunier, Vice President of Marketing for United College Marketing Services. On average, students carry over a $725 balance, Meunier said, and then they end up paying a lot in interest. It is very easy for many cardcarrying students to rack up a large bill. "I charge everything from clothes to gas, and most of the time I don't even realize how much I have charged," said Paige Norris, an ISU sophomore. In addition, sometimes students do not realize how much interest they pay, either. "Students pay, on the average, 17.25 percent ...

Something good on T.V [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

Something good on T.V by Erin Henmnger staff writer Why is it that as soon as siudenls make new resolutions for their study regime, the networks try to lure them away with "The New Fall Line Up?" If your senses are overloading on endorphins from the realization that there is finally something good to watch on TV, this guide will help you make your viewing choice. ABC. CBS, NBC, FOX, WB. and UPN have already begun combating for ratings, but the major kick-off dale seems to be September 13th, and premieres will continue up through November. To further simplify this decision, I have researched the upcoming shows and picked the most watchable for every evening. So, put down that book, give your remote some exercise lor a change, and watch TV..you know you want to. SUNDAY: Erin's pick-Jack and Jill (9:00 September 26, WB). Simple Lies are good to hear [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

Simple Lies are good to hear by Leanne Acklin staff writer Hearing Simple Lies isn't necessarily bad anymore - especially when they happen to be a new hard hitting band from Edinboro w ith ties to Behrend. Simple Lies has been together nearly a year now, but the live guys that make up the group are all friends from the high school days. Brad Williams (guitar), Jon Beckman (vocals), and Sean Sundy (guitar, vocals) are still drudging down the education road together here at Behrend. The band also features Jesse Johnson (bass, vocals) and Joe Cimino (drums). As they escaped the high school scene, they've expanded their playing area. Simple Lies performed this past summer al Forward Hall on Peach Street, which they described as a "good show." More recently though, these guys played with other local talent at Tune Town, a concert ground located on Route 8 in Titusville. on September I Ith. "We expected a 'battle of the bands.' but were disappointed that all the cover bands won. W...

Martin Lawrence finds a winning "streak" I [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 24 September 1999

Martin Lawrence finds a winning "streak" I by Jermaine Hardy staff writer For the past year Hollywood has been on a "blue streak," producing films that either depress or disappoint the viewers. Lately, the big screen scene has been a rather grim one. If we weren't being haunted this summer, we were being rocked to sleep while on a trip to the wild, wild, wack lands. But now that we're back from the hot horrors of summer vacation, temperatures drop a bit and film fans get a cool breeze, thanks to a man by the name of Martin Lawrence. who conies up with a Blue Streak of his own. In Blue Streak, Martin Lawrence plays a skilled jewel thief who steals a diamond and hides it in a construction siteturned-police department. In an effort to recover it. he poses as a police detective and the mayhem ensues. In this action-comedy directed by Les Mayfield, Lawrence is teamed up with Luke Wilson. As partners in crime fighting, the two take us on a roller coaster ride that we wish would ne...
