IN THE FIRELIGHT . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886
IN THE FIRELIGHT . The fire upon the hearth Is low , , And there is stillness everywhere ; Like troubled spirits , here and there The firelight shadows fluttering go . And aa the shadows round me creep , A childish treble breaks the gloom , And softly from tbe farther room Comes : Now I lay me down to sleep , And , somehow , with that little prayer And that sweet treble in my ears , My thought goes back to distant years And lingers with , that dear one there ; And as I hear the childs amen , l My mother s faith comes back to me ; Crouched at her side I seem to be , And mother holds my hands again . Oh , for an hour in that dear place—Oh , for the peace in that dear time , Oh , for a childish trust sublime . Oh , for a glimpse of mother s face I Yet , as theshadowsironnd me creep , I do not seem to be alone—Sweet magic of that treble tone And Now I lay me down to sleep !

What Heavy Manuring Did . To show what may be done for any kind of crop we take the following item from the New England Farmer : A Connecticut farmer , quite unexpectedly , grew a tremendous corn crop last year . The land was in grass the previous year , heavily manured with horse manure after haying , and then plowed . It was manured in the sprln-r with hen manure and superphosphate . The idea was to tit the ground for a future onion crop , and not to particularly benefit the corn . But the corn stole more ot the plant food than was expected . But the corn only stole what it required to make the tremendous crop . as such crops are not grown where food is lacking . The moral of the above is that if you wish to secure heavy crops of corn you must manure for it , even if you are forced to have the ground as rich as an onion bed . Kaffir Corn . —Teosinte . WUl you please let me know where I can get Klfflr corn seed and how it is cultivated , and what time is best to plant it ; also whi...
