THE FARMERS' SIDE [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

THE FARMERS SIDE AN INSURANCE STATEMENT . _^ HE published balance sheet of . the New York Life I Insurance Company affords a splendid example ¦ * - ¦ of the point we referred tp last week in the editforialtorial , Who are the Money-lenders . We were refuting the absurd claim that the thrifty poor men are really the money lenders of this nation because they deposit money in savings banks and purchase liife insurance . We stated that the directors and officers of the great institutions mentioned were the real fund-holders and beneficiaries , not the poor . Now let us eixamine the statement referred to . We find assets of $ 174 , 600 , 000 invested as follows : U . S . Railway , Bank , Trust Co ., Bonds and : stock ...... ...... .. ; . $ 107 , 000 , 000 Other Bonds and Mortgages ............ 32 , 000 , 000 Real Estate , City Office Bldgs . 16 , 000 , 600 Balance in loans on stocks and bonds , $ 174 , 006 , 000 Of this amount $ 147 , 000 , 000 are required by law as a reserve , the bala...

TAKING COPPER FOR A STANDARD . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

TAKING COPPER FOR A STANDARD . THE latest freak of the gold contractionists is to use the cent as a standard of measure . The gold dollar is called the 100 cent dollar and the silver dollar the fifty cent dollar . This is another count in summing up the charge of financial ignorance as laid against the average political editor and goldite politicians . For example , the TimesHerald , Chicago , April 24 , in an editorial summing up the • declarations of some Eastern Republican committees on the money question , said : The people everywhere are overwhelmingly for the gold standard , and 100 cents to the dollar . In this the editor both betrays his ignorance of public sentiment and the relations of a cent in our monetary system . The gold dollar is since 1873 the standard of measure , not the cent . Prior to that time the silver dollar was the standard . Measuring money by what they call its intrinsic value , they have ignorantly coined these phrases , 50 cent dollars and 100 cent doll...

CAUSE AND RESULT [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

CAUSE AND RESULT The volume of business , has not on the whole , increased , nor have prices appreciably advanced since April 1 st when the range of all commodities was the lowest ever known in this country . So says R . G . Dunn & Co / s Review of Trade , the past week . To the uninitiated the question arises , why are prices low ? Why is the range of prices of all commodities the lowest ever known in this country ? There is no effect without a cause , what is the cause ? The standard authorities on political economy afford a ready and simple solution . John Stuart Mill , in Principles of Political Economy , page 301 , says : That an increase of the quantity of money raises prices and a diminution lowers them , is the most elementary proposition in the theory of currency . Mason & Lailor in their Primer of Political Economy say : One thing may rise in value , but in order that it may do so , other things must fall . If money rises in value , it will take les...

WHERE IS HE AT ? ! [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

WHERE IS HE AT ? ! xne great problem of the hour is where does McKinley stand on the silver question ? Republican voters , especially among the producing classes , would like to have a direct answer to that question . We regret our inability to answer it . Somebody knows . Perhaps silence in this instance is golden . As for McKinley himself he refers us to his record and speeches . We have been looking up both , but find it much like the toper s tanglefoot , the more we take of it and the more are we at a loss to know where he is at . In congress he voted at different times on both sides of the question . . In reading his speech at the Lincoln banquet of the Ohio Republican League Feb . 12 , 1891 , he said Mr . Cleveland was determined to contract the circulating medium and demonetize one of the coins of commerce , limit the volume of money among the people , make money scarce and therefore dear . He would have increased the value of money and diminished the value of everything else...

SILVER SPRAY . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

SILVER SPRAY . Whenever a test ballot has been taken on the silver question it has been found that in cities those who believe in the restoration of silver on the ratio of 16 to 1 are as two to one , whereas the country people are practically unanimous for the white metal . The goldites know this well no matter what their pretentions may be . This is the reason why such vast sums of money are being expended to try and confuse the minds of the people on this question . It is not the people who are spending the money but the bondholders . Productive industry should respond with a straight ballot for the protection of the American farmer and workingman , whlcht bimetallism alone will supply . *? # -7 The silver record of the two leaden * candidates for the presidency on the republican ticket , as neither has the couiv : age to speak out , is best shown by their records in Congress : It appears that McKinley voted in * favor of the Bland free coinage act Nov . . 5 , 1877 , and that Mr ....

IN THE EVENT . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

IN THE EVENT . The Republican party at the St . Louis convention will give no uncertain sound ih the platform , but will make it so plain that all men will understand it that has common sense . And if the nominee is elected , which he is sure to be , they will carry out the principles laid down in the platform with neatness and precision . It would be hazardous in the extreme for them to do otherwise . I like your paper well . It is a champion in behalf of the working men of our country and at the same time holds out justice to bankers . The day of deliverance is not far in the future jsilver will be restored torts proper place , as it was before 1873 , and at the same old ratio , 16 to 1 . I am a silver and gold Republican on the terms taught in the good book . I believe in tbe use of both metals . The Republicans and Democrats of this vicinity are in favor of both metals at the : ratio of 16 to 1 and we will vote when the time comes for a return to prosperity .. P ^ rry Co ., Indi...

THEY ARE FOR SILVER . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

THEY ARE FOR SILVER . The following accompanied a pledge , containing 120 names , to-vote for no candidate , not pledged to the restoration of silver : Enclosed find a list of names of Dickson county ; Tennessee , sentiment on the free coinage of silver . I was surprised about the change that has taken place , amohgthe voters of this county . Most of the people have lost sight of partyism , and are going to vote for principle . There is 90 per cent , for free coinage of silver . They all feel the need of money and want a change in government and laws in favor of the poor . I am an old man nearly 72 years old and lost one eye about three years ago , and am not very able to go and see the neighbors , but I have- good reform cause at heart O . my country and liberty —I find that is about the sentiment everywhere . I have been a reader for a number of years of your paper . I think if more farmers would take more interest in reading your paper they would all learn to understand why We ha...

WEEKLY MARKET REVIEW [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

WEEKLY MARKET REVIEW GRAIN MARKETS . Chicago , May 12 , 1896 . There was not much of interest , in any of the markets yesterday . Grains sold higher than they closed Saturday early in the day , but during the greater part of the session they were more weak than strong , closed at a decline of % c on July wheat , unchanged on July corn and ^ c lower on oats . Receipts of wheat all around are nothing to brag of , while the movement from the west—where all the wheat had accumulated—to the « ast—where supplies had become about depleted—is very liberal , indeed . Add all this to the crop conditions as they now exist and there appears to be quite a little of encouragement for wheat holders in the outlook . Receipts at nine primary points aggregated 377 , 000 , shipments 967 , 000 bu . Last year they were 301 , 000 and 513 , 000 , respectively . The . noithwest had 379 cars , against 237 a year ago and 477 a week ago . Chicago received 4 cars of winter , 2 being contract , and 8 of spring ...

FINE MARKSMANSHIP OF THE BOERS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

FINE MARKSMANSHIP OF THE BOERS . On the subject of marksmanship among the Boers , Mr . White described the training through which most of them go from boy hood . Pointing to a photograph that hung in his room , he said : *•! have seen that man put a rifle into the hands of a child and tell him to shoot at a bottle a hundred yards off or more , promising a reward of ten shilling when he could hit that small mark repeatedly . After a time the lad was taught to shoot at objects moving at a distance- of four hundred yards , and the promise that he should have a pony to ride when he became proficient at that practice soon ; made him an expert shot . Bifle ranges are not scarce in the Transvaal , and many of our volunteers would be glad if they could get similar opportunities for musketry-training in England . The Boers will have nothing to do with modern magazine rifles . They are armed , or arm themselves , with Martini-Henrys , and desire nothing better unless , perhaps , it be a Winch...

AN UNEXPLORED MOUNTAIN . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

AN UNEXPLORED MOUNTAIN . Among the many objects of interest that have been brought to light by the Anglo-Venezuelan dispute there is ,. perhaps , none that claims quite so much attention from the scientific world as the socalled Mountain of Roraima . Situated in the southwestern corner of Sir Robert Schomburgk s alleged boundary between British Guiana and Venezuela , thisv wonderful geographical phenomenon , although long known , has elicited but little interest . In point of fact , however , it is a veritable scientific sphinx , the message of whose riddle has come down - intact and unread from far geological epochs to the present time . This stupendous mountain , or isolated tableland , which the native Indians call Roraima , or the mysterious , rises high m in solitary grandeur above the , surrounding mountain system , its perpendicular rocky sides rendering it -absolutely inaccessible to the foot of man or beast . Crowning this impregnable fortress ^ of Nature is a tract : of te...
