TOBACCO GROWING AND CURING . —NO . 2 . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 13 April 1907

TOBACCO GROWING AND CURING . —NO . 2 . Transplanting . —Unless the summer months are very wet early plowing for tobacco is generally best as this gives a better opportunity to have a good plant bed and the tobacco is better prepared to withstand a drouth . It also gives the weeds an early start and they can be destroyed one or more times before the tobacco is transplanted . A few inches of flne dirt mulch on top with a firm bed underneath forms an ideal plant bed . The ground should be pulverized and leveled several weeks before time to plant as it can then be gotten in condition for planting at any time . Always stir and level the soil as soon as it is dry enough after each rain and especially just before transplanting . For Spanish , the rows should be from 30 to 36 inches apart and the planter should be set to drop about 22 inches apart . For seed-leaf the rows should be 3 ft . and the planter ( see illustration herewith ) set to drop about 30 inches apart . Drive slowly as it is...

TRY A FEW ACRES OF BEANS AND PEAS THIS SEASON . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 13 April 1907

TRY A FEW ACRES OF BEANS AND PEAS THIS SEASON . Beans and peas can be made the most profitable crops on the farm . when their full value is known and utilized . They may be grown for seed or fodder ; and by those farmers who observe a regular rotation of crops , they can be placed with such grains as corn , wheat , oats , barley , etc ., to excellent advantage . The last named grains to do well , require plenty of nitrogen in the soil ; and to secure good crops year after year , the supply of nitrogen must be replenished in some manner . Beans and peas being leguminous crops , gather the free nitrogen from the air and deposit it in the soil and therefore supply just the element which the other grains remove . They take the place of fertilizer and at the same time the crop is very valuable . The seed always commands a good price and the vines make the very best kind of food for cattle , sheep , horses , etc ., as they are rich in protein which is the most expensive constituent of sto...

[ LIVE STOCK ] [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 13 April 1907

[ LIVE STOCK ] SHEEP NOTES . TAGGING SHEEP . Now that brook-washing sheep has gone almost entirely out of fashion , many farmers are in doubt as to whether to tag or not . Where one has the lambs come before shearing it is important that the ewes be tagged before the lambs come . With the fine wooled breeds the wool needs to be clipped away from the udders to give the little fellows an unobstructed chance to get at the teat . Sometimes , especially if the lamb is a little puny , it means all the difference between life and death and , with lambs at present and prospective prices , it pays to go to great pains to get them started past the critical stage of the first twenty-four hours . Beside this , ewes that are suckling lambs should be out of the yards part of the time on pleasant days and will get enough grass to cause them to get dirty unless tagged , and many turn out to grass a few days before shearing , and in this case it is utterly impossible to keep untagged ewes in decent ...

I AGRICULTURAL 1 SCIENCE mmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaa [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 13 April 1907

I AGRICULTURAL 1 SCIENCE mmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaa ¦^^^^ - ^™^— * mm- * -mmmm PROTECTION FROM FROST . I have been greatly interested in the letter from Mr . M . C . Morris , Butler Co ., O ., in your issue ot March 2 , relative to my article on the protection of crops from frost that was published in your issue of February 9 . I have received quite a number of letters regarding the sending of frost warnings and protecting crops from frost , and understand that the Publications Division of the Department at Washington has received such a call for Farmers Bulletin No . 104 that their supply is entirely exhausted . This all goes to show the wide distribution of your valuable paper , and the confidence that the readers have in its published matter . There are two or three things in Mr . Morris article that need a little further discussion . 1 . Winter killing of fruit trees . Bulletin No . 157 of the Ohio Experiment Station , covers the winter killing of peach trees , in an excellent manner . E...
