Dp . MeKmgm s Reception to the Seniors . The White House on the campus has always had the reputation of entertaining the graduating class in royal style and none realized this fact more than the Seniors of 99 when the genial Doctor and his accomplished wife received them on Tuesday evening from five until nine o clock . Every member of the class attended the reception , having a card with the class colois pinned to his coat . Upon the card being the letters of some words cabalistically arranged . After being greeted by Doctor and Mrs . McKnight and also Misses Krauth and Gilbeit who assisted in the receiving , these grave and reverend seniors with learning galore (?) attempted to solve the puzzles of their own creation . Refreshments followed and the class was served with an excellent repast . The latter part of the evening was devoted to the several toasts responded to by many members of the class , Miss Welty acting as toastmaster , in a neat and graceful manner _introducing the s...

WE hear a great deal in these days about college spirit . Th < words have a nice sound and we arc fond of using them ; the ) are continually being aired in our college journals , and aie used ir neaily every speech made at our student mass-meetings . However , i _: it not true that the woids , as they are frequently employed , have nc _significance whatever , whilst to many they have a meaning entirely opposite to that which they should convey ? College spirit considers the best interests of Alma Mater fiist , last and always . It is nol sour and pessimistic , but blight and hopeful . It encourages every laudable student cnterpi ise , and frowns down all forms of negativcism It doubly arms our athletic teams for every contest , with hope and confidence ....

_ATHltETIC NEWS . There was unexpected jubilation in Gettysburg last Saturday night , and the occupants of two wagons which came from _Ltttlestown near midnight weie enthusiastically received . It was no wonder , for Earnie Armstrong , the well-known base-ball manager of several years ago , had flashed over the wires that expected defeat had been turned into vie- tory , when the season of 99 was opened by defeating Franklin anc Maishall on their giounds by a score of 6 to 4 . v . m . c . a . Once again has the time come to present the cause of the Northfield Student Conference which will be held from June 30 to July 9 . The benefits received from the Northfield trip are twofold : first , it offers splendid opportunities to come face to face with our Saviour ; and second , the trip itself is one of true pleasure and enjoyment . Were you to see the fellows steal away into the woods in the eaily morning to spend a little while alone with Jesus , were you to hear the words which fall from the lips of those who by putting away self and putting _<^ n Christ have come to a wonderful nearness to him , I am sure that you would want Gettysburg well represented there this summer . We would ask that as many fellows as possible go this summer . If you cant go yourself help in a financial way to send some on else . We would also be most grateful to any alumni who may see their way clear to aid us in this work . O , n Thursday evening at 7 . 30 , Dr . McKnig...

SOCIETIES . PIIILO . The program rendered in Philo last Friday evening was short but nevertheless most interesting . The attendance was not so large as usual and many of the expected performers were among the absentees , however those who were present , had come prepared to make the meeting a success . The main feature of the evening was the debate . The question Resolved that the United States is on a wrong financial basis , was argued on the affrmative by Baker and Moore , while Long and Poffinberger had charge of the negative . The speeches indicated a careful preparation on the part of the debaters and proved that there is an increase of activity for this part of the program . What the Gcttysburtriati has said in the last few months concerning the importance of debates and the necessity of college students becoming proficient as debaters , we are glad to note , has done much good among the members of Pluln . PHRENA . The regular Friday evening meeting was fairly well attended . ...
