A Successful Farmer . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
A Successful Farmer . The following appeared in The Index , Kirkland , Texas , May 1910 , and refers to a No . 0 American Wonder Separator , price $ 15 . 95 , and by its use in six weeks Mr . Morrow had sold butter enough to pay for the machine : Last Friday W . . L . Morrow of Garden Valley brought in twenty-eight pounds of butter for which he found a ready sale at the grocery stores at a good price . Later in the day THE INDEX , reporter had a talk with him upon this subject and he tsated that about six weeks ago he purchased a cream separator and since then has sold enough butter to pay for the separator . He says that with the use of the machine they can handle more milk with less work and get better results from the same . This is a matter which should have the attention of all farmers , as there is a good market here for butter at all times of the year . A few pounds of butter each week go a long ways towards paying the grocery bills , which are quite an item on the farm . Mr ...
Some Good Records [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
Some Good Records Dundee , N . Y . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We have just been tabulating some of our farrowing records for the year just past . In the herd we have several Highwood Columbia sows and almost as many Highwood Ezit sows . We have bred these sows for generations and have been quite careful in the selections we have made for our own breeding herd . Their record for the year 1910 is very gratifying . The litters from the Highwood Columbia sows range from 9 to 15 and the average is 11 . 6 pigs to the litter throughout the year . The litters from the Highwood Ezit sows range from 8 to 13 and the average is 10 . 8 pigs to the litter for the year . We are reserving about twenty of the Columbia gilts to be bred when a year old and retained in the herd . Will also reserve about the same number of Highwood Ezit gilts . One litter , out of Highwood Columbia 122319 , farrowed June 1 st , averaged 204 pounds , weighed December 1 st , the day they were s...
Don ' t Like the Custer Type [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
Don t Like the Custer Type Farmersburg , la . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen—Have just received the January Berkshire World , and It is a neat , well edited , and instructive publication , but where we disagree is on the type of Berkshire . For one I do not like the M . H . Custer hog ; too long , though the feed ought to digest before it leaves him . The short nosed hog has not done well with us . The air , unlike the feed in the Custer type , goes up into the head before it is warm and the eyes water , the subject has snuffles , and 1 would gladly subscribe for your publication , if I lived where the Negro and Short Nosed hog could thrive . We have one negro in this county and he snuffles . Yours Truly , Frank J . Corlett .

From An Old Breeder [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
From An Old Breeder BY GEO . W . BERRY , TOPEKA , KAN Better Equipment—Better Berk shires . REVIEW of the farms ot the breeders of swine in the corn belt states reveals a surprising need of improvements . The writer has had the privilege of visiting the homes o £ most of the best herds of pure bred swine of the different breeds . A careful retrospection recalls but very few farms with ideal equipment for rearing any considerable number or a large per cent of first class hogs . The statement implies a general acquaintance . In the state of Illinois we know two breeders of Berkshires , W . S . Corsa and A . J . Lovejoy & Son , whose improvements and equipment are ideal . The writer can recall but one well equipped hog breeding plant in Nebraska , that of the late Mr . Barton of South Omaha ; one or two in Missouri , and one or two in Kansas , among these being the Goodrich farm , breeding Po-land-Chinas at Eldon , Mo ., and Sutton Farm , owned by Charles E . Sutton , breed...

WHICH WAYAREY 0 U PAYING FOR AN IHC GASOLINE ENGINE ? THERE are two ways—a quick , easy way and a long , costly way . The first way is to go to the I H C local dealer , pick out the style and size suited to your needs—pay for it—take it home and set it to work . It will operate your cream separator , feed grinder , thresher , fanning mill , turn your grindstone , saw wood , etc . The other way is to get along as best you can without it , and pay for it over and over again in the time and money you lose by not having it . Procrastination is the thief of time , and time is money . An I H C Engine saves time—saves money . Its an investment that pays big dividends , day after day , year in and year out , through its capacity for doing work at less cost than any other power . IH C Gasoline Engines are made in all styles and sizes , 1 to 4 S-H . P ., vertical SSSSSSHHSSSHSHSSSSSSBPSBBI and horizontal—stationary , portable , and tractor . More News From Russwurm [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
More News From Russwurm Nashville , Tenn . Berkshire World , Springfield , III . Gentlemen : Farmers of the south are fast finding out that the old brood sow is the best investment one can have on a farm . As a money maker she is far ahead of the ewe , the brood mare , the young mule , the Jersey cow , the jennet , or the old blue hen , or anything else . She brings more returns on the investment than any of the above . As a rule she does not get half the good treatment that is given the other live stock , yet she is the most valuable .. It is a little surprising to find so few people who give good attention to their brood sows . They are not , as a rule , even provided with good shelter . They are allowed to root , hog or die , as it were . But we are improving . We have had many letters , lately , asking for plans of hog houses , such as used on some of the best farms . Invariably do we cite the Lovejoy plan . They are easy of construction , not very expensive and meet every requi...

Steward Advertises Holstein Bull Calf . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
Steward Advertises Holstein Bull Calf . The growing popularity of The Berkshire World as a clearing house for the breeders grows apace . We cant help but feel proud of the confidence our friends have in the selling ability of this paper . Mr . Steward has been a steady and consistent advertiser for some time , and he pretty nearly knows where to place his advertising to get results . His sending us an ad this month offering for sale a Holstein bull calf makes us feel justified in calling your attention to the wide range of uses The Berkshire World can be put to . Here are a few of the things that have been sold in the past six months , simply by using The Berkshire World . The advertisements used to sell the following named stock were run exclusively in this paper : Sheep , Jerseys , Turkeys , Angora Cats , Cook Books , Hackney horses , and many others . The fact that Mr . Steward has chosen this paper to sell his bull calf ought to prove to many other breeders the advisability of a...
