GARFIELD AND CHANDLER. (Continued from first page.) debt upon the people. Fellow citizens, let us be honest about that business. Who made that great debt It is yet enormous. It was twelve years ago a still more enor mous burden but who made it? I bring the Tflst burden of that public debt and lay it at the door of the Democratic party, for they made it all. [Applause.] No Repub lican ever lifted his hand to smite the union. The men who sought its life in the war weie Democrats all, and if the Demo cratic party of the north had stood like one man against the rebellion, there never could have.been a war. It was because the south believed they would have the help of the northern Democracy, or believed they would not have their opposition, and for that reason the enormous burden of debt was piled up on the shoulders of this coun try. When the war was over, and we stepped forward to the front, we saw this load of debt, so great that timid men said, You can never pay it." and wicked men, ...

THETRANSCRIPT C. H. DAVIDSON, Editorgg^ Proprietor. AUSTIN, MINNESOTA: THURSDAY MORNING. AUG. 21,1879. WE are glad that Nellie Grant is not dead, as was rumored. It was Mrs. T. W. Sartoris, formerly the actress, Ade laide Kemble. PAGE'S only influential newspaper friend—the St. Paul Dispatch—deserts liim. Read what that paper has to say in another column. PAGE questions the good taste of a man who buys "slang" for his family to read. So, lie takes the Republican. He admires the "slang" in that paper, as he writes the most of it himself. WE should he pleased to know what papers there are left in Minnesota which it woulcl be safe for Sherman Page's fam ily to read? There is not a paper of prom* inence in the state that is not out upon him. THE Wykoff Dollar Weekly has a very sensitive stomach. HONEYSUCKLE. How fair they wero uiy tlarlings twain Who walked ado wn the graesy lano That sultry August, day: Unconscious of the gracious charin That floated round thorn, arm-in-arm They wandered ou their way. One wore her raven tresses low, Cloee-braWed o'er a brow of suuw, Like some grand Riman daiue: Hers were those luminous, large eyes, from whotedark depths strange gleams arico And break in sudden flame. Around her sister's gentler face The brown hair rippled, tender grace Was in her form and look: A wild-rose color on her cheek, Brown loTing eyes, contented, ineok, And clear as summer brook. I sat beneath a shady tree, And heard their laughter floating free, Through idle, happy hours I saw them gather by the way The straggling clusters, sweet and gay, Of honeysuckle flowers. 1 watched them wave their scented spoil, In eager haste, with playful toil, And laughter brimmioc-eyes They twined it on my faded brow. Ah, Heaven) I have that garland now, A sacred, mournful prize! Was i...

1,,/IHTj] ^'HUJimilE umaiiMP I As SttiowiW John Derosa's Stenbenville, Ohio. chat Magnificent Results of the Republican Finin f, cial Policy. John Sherman, the great secretary of the treasury, made his first speech in the Ohio campaign at Steubenville, on the 21st. It covered all the leading ques tions at issue before the people—national finance, banking, governmental economy, state sovereignty and federal supremacy. Of course, it is a strong and well consid ered document, as Sherman is not ajt to speak at random. As finance minister of the republic in a crisis almost without a parallel in its history, the most intsr esiing subjects which he could recount, and with which he is most familiar, are those of finance. He traces the succes sive steps toward resumption in a man* ner so clear and masterly that the plain est reader can understand and appreciate the solid facts which he presents in favor of that great measure of stainless honor and nobie faith. He thus sketches the movement i...

Extracts From Carl Schurz's Speech at Cin cinnati Carl Sckurz addressed a large audi* ence in Cincinnati on the evening of the 20th inst., on the national finances, cur rency, state rights and the ballot. After speaking of the success and advantages of resumption, he said: Suppose yon Democrats prevail, not only in this state, but on the national field, how would your success affect the business movements of the country? At present business feels under its feet again the firm grouud of a reasonable stability of current values. Safe business calculations can be made.
