A few weeks since that grim monster, Dealbentered the Senate chamber, and cut dowu one of oar strongest men in the person of Wm. Pitt Fesscnden. A fortnight earlier a cabinet minister fell a victim .to his slaughter. . And now he has ascended the Supeine Bench and removed one of the natiou's strongest bulwarks. Prob ably no loss since the assassination of our beloved President will be so widely felt and deeply mourned. To the ser vices of no other man rendered when the nation was at its sorest need, are the American people more deeply indebted Succeeding 3Ir. Cameron as Secretary of War at the darkest hour of the -war, he bent the entire cuergies of his mind, soul and body to the execution of the will of the people, and from that hour to the end of the war a confidence of final success steadily increa...

In making my bow to the patrons of Tun Xrvrii, I feel an embarrassment which but natural. Without experi ence, I bring to my new duties nothing more than the confidence Hint the ability and willingness to assiduously labor, to gether with a ccrtiiin enthusiasm which I fed in my new work, will ultimately insure some degree of success. Inured to pedagogical habits in the past, I have acquired no other qualifications for an editor than those which this manner of life would naturally furtfista. Were it not that by reason of comparative youth the Fphercof usefulness and proficiency in the path of labor that now stretches before mo, may not be entirely beyond my reach, the step I now take might well be deemed unwise and tinpropi lious. But with youth, with a hope that begets somewhat of confidence, with imtlfiit industry and close application to business,' a...
