YELLOW JACKET Page I Year's Sports Provides Galaxy Of Thrills Thursday May 16 1940 ; By JOE FUQUA This current yeur has offered the sports fans of Howard Payne many thrills that will not soon be forgotten. A timely review of a few of these events might be of some Interest to the reader. Let us start with the very fit at of the college year and come straight through. Football to the incoming fresh- men of Howard Payne almost had the meaning of the school spirit. And it was as It should have been. A college without any spirit just can't win any ball games. Joe Hext wils selected as captain of the football squad with Bob Dcn- dy and Sid Russell as co-captalns. It surely looked hard to fill the places of fellows like Barbce Dyer and Boedeckcr but there are always some top notehers ready to take over. Sept. 22. Wednesday September 18 1940 YELLOW JACKET Page 3 ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS TO SEE ACTION THIS WEEK I Veteran Bobcats Await Jackets A couple of question mark ball clubs will tangle Friday night when the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets journey down to San Marcos for another personal scrap with Joe Bailey Cheaney and his always tough Southwest State Bobcats. Both the Yellow Jackets and the Bobcats have been marked as a leam-to-beat club in their respec- tive conferences Howard Payne In the Texas circuit and Southwest State in the Lone Star. But still both have a little "if" tacked on their ratings Howard Payne'B emphasized in blocking and re- placements and Southwest State still hanging back with just some- thing lacking. For sometime now drum-beaters around San Marcos have been hailing the 1940 Bobcats as the most promising bunch of gridders that have come out of those parts since Coach Cheaney took over the reins in 1035. And with sixteen lettermen forming the nucleus of the Cat squad which a...

Page 4 Thursday October 10 1940 YELLOW JACKET The Limeiisht estimation it was one of the finest bits of motion picture to come our way in a long while. Spencer Tracy in true form turned in a sterling performance against such competition as Clark Gable Cau- dette Colbert and Hedy Lamarr. Virginia Dale a winsome blonde who up until now hus played one movie role at a time today broke all records by playing 105022 per- sons in a single scene for Parn- mount's "The Quarterback." The scene called for Wayne Morris a football hero who has been knock- ed cold on the gridiron to look up at the stands. In his dazed condi- tion the stands appear to be filled entirely with pretty girls and all the girls look like Virginia Dale. Though he plays the piano well the hardest job Mickey nooncy had In "Strike Up the Band" was to learn to play a zyplophone. It took him two weeks to master a tune.
