LeVay gets it wrong again Neuroscientist claims gay men have difficulty forming relationships, says partner differences related to the expression of gender polarity Former neuroscientist Simon LeVay made a brief splash 15 years ago with research purporting to show that a part of gay men's brains he claimed was associated with sexual attraction in animals was slightly more like the brains of women than were the brains of ostensibly heterosexual men. The study had a number of problems: The gay men all died of AIDS but the effect of the disease and antiviral drugs on the brain was left unexplored. The orientation of the supposedly non-gay men was actually unknown. The role of the studied brain segment in humans is uncertain. And some gay men's brain segments were more "male" than some of the heterosexual men's. The study has not been replicated, and LeVay soon retired from neuroscience research. Now LeVay is back with a long, meandering and confusing think piece once again arguing that...

life+stylesports A . Golden receiver A few years ago, lifetime jock Rachel Golston tackled women's football. Playing for Dallas Rage, she leads National Women's Football Association in receptions By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor She's six-feet tall, super-heroine lean and smells like gardenias. In one hand, Rachel Golston carries a tiny clutch purse with a hairbrush handle sticking out of the top. In the other, she grips a mas- sive set of football shoulder pads wrapped in a mesh jersey. "Growing up, sports were my life and my passion," she says. "However, I was also all about style and looking good." As the team captain and wide receiver for the Dallas Rage, Golston currently leads the National Women's Football Association with 23 receptions for 373 yards. The two-year-old Rage isn't a powder puff team. They play hard- hitting tackle football. Walking in practice cleats, Golston raises her forearm to show off some enor- mous purple bruises. Football is still a relatively new i...

stage All that jazz From 'Phantom' to 'Cabaret' to 'Mame,' laughs come fast in 'Musical' By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer As if the title alone weren't a dead giveaway, "Musical of Musicals: The Musical" is basi- cally porn for theater queens. The ecstasy — and the naughtiness — doesn't come from sex but rather from puns and satiric musical riffs that might fly over the heads of all but diehard musi- cal-comedy lovers. Sound like a rarefied audience? The nearly packed house at Theatre Three opening night didn't think so. "M of M: The M" is nonstop fun and silliness, with a trite threadbare plot about a girl who can't pay her rent until the hero drops in at the last moment to save the day. But that plot is played five times over, first to the strains of Rodgers & Hammerstein, then Sondheim, Jerry Hennan, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kander & Ebb. There are dream ballets, dry ice and candelabra, men in bowlers and gloves, kicklines and interi- or monologues set to an a melodic sc...

style lecture Bono does Big D When not charming fans, U2 singer unfurled priceless plans to alleviate Africa's poverty and AIDS pandemic You can't help feel sorry for Bono. Not too long ago, he used to speak out against corrupt politicians. But now he's more pragmatic because there's too much at stake. At the Music Hall in Fair Park on Cinco de Mayo, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison introduced the rock star to a sold-out crowd. And like a non- denominational missionary, Bono spread a gospel about ways we can help alleviate Africa's suffering. He's a gifted and impassioned speaker with a lot to say. A big part of Bono's cache is his fame as a musician. And he's trying to convert his U2 fan base into globally conscious advocates. He does a good job, but it's tough work — using his effortless Irish charm remembering Xf2's first Dallas gig (in 1981 at the defunct Bijou club in front of a crowd of 30 who paid the $1 cover to see a wet T-shirt contest). At his Dallas lecture, so much time was...

life+styledining The fire this time Kenny's Wood Fired Grill gives the steakhouse a retro-casual makeover By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer KiCKIN' IT OLD SCHOOL: The decor, atmosphere and attitude at Kenny's are reminiscent of a Chicago speakeasy — with- out the gunplay. Our meal began with a handshake. We're not talking about a greeting from a friend or a business associate joining us for din- ner.. Not even a maitre d' welcoming us back to our regular, casual haunt. No, the handshake came from our waiter, who offered his first name (per the custom) before asking for ours as well — names he used every time he approached the table. We didn't notice whether every other customer got the same pal- o'-mine reception, maybe because we were so surprised to get it ourselves. If that kind of familiarity puts you off, then Kenny's Wood Fired Grill in Addison might not be an ideal fit. Even without the handshake, Kenny's oozes easy sophistication with a lopey, "how-ya-doin'?" attitude. "Don...

The clam chowder ($4.95) met with more mixed results. It was slightly gritty, which meant the clams were (a) fresh, not canned but (b) not fully cleaned. We also found a shell in the broth. Too bad, because this thick new England-style soup had a lot going for it otherwise. My dining compan- ion dismisses even the idea of a wedge salad ($5.95) out of hand, but he missed the point about this staple of steakhouses. It serves a necessary function: Iceberg lettuce is simply a Rochefort delivery device. Why encumber such heady cheese with awkward greens like frisee and radicchio? Bacon crisps were very fine and the dressing, of course, top-notch. Steakhouses don't really work unless the sides (all $3.95) accent the main courses well; these do. Kenny's potato cake with dill creme fraiche was thick with moist cheddar; the haricot verts KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL Ten years ago, Susie Buck decided to leave the corpo- rate world and pursue her passion: cooking. this week's best bets concert Jim Brickman hoids special Mother's Day concert When it comes to romantic piano music, there no one who quite compares to Jim Brickman (he's even been known to sing occasionally).
