ADDRESS TO PEOPLE Commercial Secretary's Association Issues Platform—Non-Partisan Non-Political. Fort Worth, April 7, 1908. The most thoughtful and sympa- thetic friend of the masses this Re- public has ever known proclaimed the doctrine that that government was best in which the people was least governed. That doctrine holds as good today as when it was pro- nounced. The curse of the times is too much agitation, too much repression, too much interference with the guaran- teed rights of the citizen, too much meddling, too much espionage— too much government. The threat and danger of the times is in the insidious growth of socialism, which, in its final analysis, means to destroy initiative, paralyze competition, and to erect upon the ruins of a Democracy a paternalistic system under which the citizen would become the ward and servant of goaernment instead of the creator anc master of government. Therefore, on the principle that too much government is destructive of the fundamental r...

The contract calls for the building of the line north into Oldham county, to some point on the Rock Island grade; this in the next two years. The charter is to read from the north part of Dal- lam county to San Angelo, but the charter counts for little when there is no contract to build. The pro- moters have promised a ...

The Herefosi Brand, April 24, >908, ACRES A WEEK Plowing Record for Swisher County In Turning the Native Sod John Estes of Twist, a small bt t progressive little town in Swisher county, State of Panhandle, was visiting in Hereford the first of the week and the Brand reporter made his acquantance, which was altogeth- er pleasant meeting. He reads The Brand, of course, and has been for a number of years. Mr. Estes says that his county is just approaching one of the greatest "booms" that will ever be witnessed in the Pan- handle. As a basis for his belief, he states that the seven steam plows in his county turned over 300 acres of sod land last week by actual count and that in going from his ranch to- wards Plainview, he could easily see the smoke of six of them at work. And he says that they have been making this record for a number of months. Not counting the many other plows drawn by horses and mules, it is safe to estimate that 10- 000 acres have been turned within the last few ...
