BELL'S LIFE IN SYDNEY. [?] PUBLICAN'S LICENSES. [Newspaper Article] — Bell’s Life in Sydney and Sporting Reviewer — 3 October 1846

Publican's Licenses The price of a Publican's License is £30,     which, if paid for in wheat at 4d. a bushel, is one hundred and fifty bushels, which at a peek ration would feed six hundred men   for one week. A further tax of £10 is paid for permission to sell after nine o'clock at night, and the like amount if he keeps a billiard table.         A publican, therefore, purchases his   right to sell his goods (says the Australian) "at a Sacrifice of his present liberty in the house and premises for the good of the community at large."' at a cost that would furnish a week's ration of' bread for one thousand men, or, considered in another way, would supply upwards of 19 persons or two large families in bread for a year! Should any difficulty arise as to prevent     the licence being taken out by the first of July the certificate becomes void, and a further ...

Country xréwa. ¡>r.OM oun OWN COBHESPOXDESTS:] ' PARRAMATTA. THE MILLENIUM AT HAND.-A start- lingly extraordinary event occurred on Tliurs'Iay. A man, named Welseley An- derdon,' brought' before the police bench his mister, Mr. Marshall, a respectable ettler of Kissing Point, for non-pavmeiu of wages. The worthy coroner, having returned from Irs late trip lo Goulburn, with unimpaired wind appeared as mouth- piece for the plaintiff, on the promise of £1 ls. to be deducted out of the award of wages, and very cheap too, considering that Mr. Lyons said in one hour as much as any two reasonable men would talk in twice the same time-not a woid about the qua- lity. The plaintiff, who was an admirable specimen ol' the unwashed, his face not appearing to have had any connexion with soap and waler for the last six monihst tlhinking his counsel WAS not energetic enough, took Ihe case partly into his own hands and settled it, and gave the court such a vast quantity ot " slack," that he fully...
