NEWS SUMMARY [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 2 April 1915

NEWS SUMMARY An announcement was made by the tRilway department recently that the new line between Pinaroo and Murray ville would be opened for traffie on May 1, but owing to difficulties experienced in. forwarding materials the railway officials do not now think that it will be possible to open the line on that date. The difficulties are experienced chiefly through the lack of good water for steam purposes. Further safes of apples in London, ex the Moldayia, sold at-Dunn's, 12/ to 13/-, some soft Jonathans 9/ to 10/, Cox's pippinm 7/-, a few special lots bringing 25/-. Freights to New Zealand have been raised similarly to those for Australia, except that for fine mcasurinent, which is unchanged at 83/6. All sub-classi fications are abolished for both places, there- being only one rate for each class. The revonue collected at the Custom House on March' 26' amounted to: Revenue, £20,025/17/8; State, £73/13/; contingent, £160/7/2; pilotage,. £171 10/-; wharfage, £699/8/-. The Australi...

TURF TOPICS [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 2 April 1915

TURF TOPICS (By "'?lemington. ") When Mountain Knight cantered home in front of Carlita in the V.R.C. St. Leger, it was little thought that the question of three-year-old sup remacy would again be raised this sea son. Mountain Knight in the engage mont referred to had exhibited such decided superiority over the filly that there seemed no cause to doubt the ac curacy of the form. Plainly, Moun tain Knight was Carlita's Master, or so it seemed. Subsequent events, how ever served in some degree at least, to modify this opinion. After Carlita had won the Champion Race from end to end, her admirers as against Mountain Knight were heard again in the land. They then claimed that Carlita could not have been herself when she put up such a poor showing. in the St. Leger, and truth to tell there is, it must be ad mitted, something in this argument. Carlita was a much better filly at the end of the Victorian Autumn camp paign, than at the start of it. Her racing had brought her on. But while gi...

THE MASTER PASSION. CHAPTER XLV. ST. GEORGE'S, HANOVER SQUARE. [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 2 April 1915

- THE - MASTER PASSION. (By Lillian Ellerton). CHAPTER XLV. ST. GEORGE'S, HANOVER SQUARE. "'Ida, here is a letter for you from -Mrs. Salomons," said Raymond Duval, throwing a scented note into his wife's lap; "next Wednesday's her birthday, and she wants us to go down to Rich mond to help her to keep it." "I scarcely think she can want Ie/;" opening the letter, and reading it through with a contemptuous smile. "She asks you, that is enough." "'Quito enough, rather too much. I suppose you are going?" "Of course I am. As Belgravo and Beresford won't be there, I conclude you will stay at home." "I shall stay at home certainly, as nothing will ever tempt ime to set foot in that woman's house again," her cheeks flushing angrily as she thought of the last time. "Because" the temptation has gone. Last time you were well off; there was Beresford to play the sentimental lover --Belgravoe the villain, and Deverel the part of champion. Now you really might have to depend on your husbahid for a...

DIED OF HIS RICHES. FATAL GOLD BULLET. THE PACE THAT KILLS. [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 2 April 1915

DIED OF HIS RICHES. FATAL GOLD BULLET. THE PACE THAT KILLS. That the Germans cannot keep going very much longer is the opinion of a French officer who has taken part in all the fightiug since the war opened. To a "Standard" correspondent, he said:-"The 'position' is nowadays a trench, in nine cases out of ten, and must generally be taken at night. This does not always mean in the dark. At - three villages got alight, and all the thatches and hayricks ablaze east a red and smoky light. Add to this sev eral searchlights, showers of illuminat ing bombs, and the Germanns with 'flares' fixed to their bayonets--which were more useful to us than to them. You cannot form an idea of what an extraordinary scene it all made-a re gular inferno of ])ante spread over two or three miles. The fighting went on all night in this theatrical stage set ting. At our hospital there was a man with three louis in his thigh-a poor devil who had never had a louis in his pocket in his life. The bullet that had...

DECAYED TEETH. [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 2 April 1915

DECAYED TEETH. Just what effect upon tho stomach is produced by the constant swallowing of bacteria and pus from diseased teeth mingled with decomposing particles of food, we are unable to determine, but it is reasonable to suppose that gastric disturbances are greatly aggravated, if not induced, by so doing. in every colnmunity there are those who are en thusiasts on the subject of pure air and wholesome food, but whose mouths are in such a neglected condition that the air which passes through them is al most as polluted as that of a crowded tenement, and every mouthful of food swallowed carries with it into the sto mach millions of bacteria. The almost entire futility of sterilising articles of diet for patients in whose mouths ab scesses exist, or whose teeth are cover ed with tartar mixed with mucus and food in a state of decomposition, need hardly be mentioned.
