Wollongong Amateurs in Nowra EDWARDS MEMORIAL FUND CONCERT. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 30 September 1893

Wollongoag Amateurs in Htora EDWARDS MEMORIAL FUND CONCERT. The vocal and instrumental enter tainment given at the Nowra School of Arts on Thursday evening hist by a number of ladies and gentlemen from Wollongong, assisted by Mrs. Cordery, Mr. J. R. Caldwell, of Nowra, and Mr. ' Tom ' Rogerson, of Milton, waa worthy of a much larger audience than that which assembled, apart altogether from the nV»pr-t. nf tVin cnniMit. which it was gener ally anticipated would alone have secured a packed house instead of attracting only some 150 persons, a good proportion of which number represented localities out side Nowra. The entertainment, though, was highly successful throughout, and the applause which followed the various items showed unmistakably that the whole house greatly appreciated the programme, which, as well as being popular, was certainly one of the best in point of merit ever sub mitted by amateurs here. Miss M'Donald and Mr. A. J. Walker played a pianoforte duet as an introduc tio...

Notes About Nowra. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 30 September 1893

Notes About Ndwxa. (By a Vaqbant.) Being on a brief visit to your town I have been making as good use of my sojourn here as I could, by revelling in the many natural beauties that surround Nowra. The noble river, the grand old rocks with their awe-inspiring but seduc tive influences, the lovely views, the fer tile meadows, and the wealth of wild nowers lorm a fitting framework for the pleasant pioture of steady and happy pros perity which is the characteristic feature of the community in the eyes of a casual observer. But there are one or two blots on the fair page, which perhaps it would be not all unwise to call attention to. In several parts I have seen flourishing unheeded the Cape dandelion or Capo weed. It is especially luxuriant in great bunches at the corner of North and Berry streets. As its name indicates, the Cape dandelion belongs to the composite order of plants, the central florets being dark, almost black -hued, and having a surround ing ring of bright yellow florets....

Attention has lately been directed by correspondents to the metropolitan press and by various public speakers to what is regarded as a serious omission from the new Electoral Act which will now shortly come into operation. ? In the next general election, and possibly in all which will take place whilst the new Act is law, thore will be a plethora of candidates, a con tingency in which, as one prominent politician foresliadowed in Sydney re cently, the intelligent electors will have to vote for men, and not measures. This more particularly seeing the likelihood of candidates, or a great majority of them, not adhering to the one main line on which the election should be contested. There is the fear that freetrade, as well as ' protectionist ' candidates will persist in linking single tax, or unimproved values, or non-payment of members, with the main issue, and so cause a confusion none the less tlian that which occurred with respect to a number of candidates at last election.
