THE FRESH FOOD AND ICE CO. [Newspaper Article] — Bowral and Robertson Free Press — 28 August 1901

THE FRESH FOOD AND- ICE CO. Mr. Dow in.the " Leader " snj's tliat <• A marked feature of the Sydney' export produce business is the gigantic character of the private companies which contiol the trade. As with the dairying industry so with the roe.it and nil oilier classes of rural produce, the whole trade is practically in the hands of about.four.fn m3, both .with.'regard to local distribution and shipping. An illus trative example presents itself in the largest of these proprietary concerns, namely, the New South Wales Fresh Food ami Ice Com-. pany, whose buildings are situated in Sussex street, near the harbor. This company owns the bulk of the butter factories of the State, so that it is responsible in the largest degree for the inferior quality produced, as well as for the bad features in conuection with the shipping business; while it ols > docs the big gest share of the meat export bnsinesF, and in addition haudles fully one half of the milk supply of Sydney, whi...

EXODUS FROM AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — Bowral and Robertson Free Press — 28 August 1901

EXODUS FROM AUSTRALIA It-is reported that 400 men who return-, ed from South Africa are going ' back in the Britannic. We know that thou sands of others are applying to the steam-, ship companies to take them on to look after horses, and the stowaway trouble gets very serious. Why is all this anxiety te get away from this wonderful country ? Surely, with all the legislation the so-call ed democrats have put upon us during the last ten years, there should be work for everyone. How is it we still hear of unemployed and relief works ? Has the legislation been a failure ? Sensible busi ness men have pointed out for years that all attempts at Government interference with labor and hours would result in a failure (and, apparently that marvellously experimental country, New Zealand, is just going to realise it). Capital is leav ing Australia, enterprize is checked, and all caused by men being put into Parlia ment who are mostly unfit for any busi ness management whatever, and are, in many ...

An Ancient Document. [Newspaper Article] — Bowral and Robertson Free Press — 28 August 1901

An Ancient Document. Mr. J. A. Badgery, of Sutton Forest, be longs to one of the earliest and most rds jjeeted pioneer families of New South Wales. His progenitors arrived in Sydney in 1798, and his father was born in Sydney in 180S, Mr. Badgery tells some curious reminiscences in connection with the early history of Sydney, and seems delighted to meet and converse with anyone having any connection with the very early days of the colony. One of his anecdotes refers to a contract carried out by a relative during the period when Governor Macquarie ruled in this colouy between the years of 1810 and 1821. The document relating to this con tract is signed •' liaclilan Macquarie, Go vernor," and is likely to become of historic al interest in the future. It is still in the possession of Mr< T. Roberts, one of the numerous relatives of the Badgery family. It refers to the clearing of George-street in I the city of Sydttey itl about the year 1812. The conditions provide for the gr...
