"SAFETY STRIPS" Prevention is Better Than Cure. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 6 April 1929

"SAFETY STRIPS" Prevention it Better Than Cure. In order to reduce the risk of forest fires to a minimum, the State of Pennsylvania (U.S.A.) has re cently attempted an interesting ex periment. Many serious outbreaks of fire have occurred owing to sparks flying from trains passing through forest areas, and so the State is .planting "safety strips" of evergreen trees along some of the most haz ardous places. This practice has led the State Department of Forests and Waters to consider the planting of dense screens of evergreen trees, after the practice of European coun tries, along all railway rights-of-way. This close planting of trees assures a quick formation of a dense cover by the interlacing of the branches as the trees develop, and it is hoped that this screen of foliage will ex tinguish engine sparks and cinders before they fall to the ground. Safety strips are always of ser vice. In many of our city streets there are the "safety zones" where the pedestrian may be safe from the...

Of Interest to Women THE ART OF MAKE-UP. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 6 April 1929

Of Interest to Women THE ART OF MAKE-UP. (By Evelyn Brent, Paramount (player.) "Make-up h&s become an accepted fact in the life of the well-dressed woman of to-day," says Evelyn Brent, who plays one of the main roles in "Interference," Para mount's all-dialogue production. "But," continues Miss Brent, 'in order that make-up may achieve its real purpose, it must be done care fully and well. "One of the most important items in the make-up box fe a good true mirror which must be placed in the best possible light, either under very strong electric globes or close to a window. "Just the right amount of colour ing should be used, and it should be impossible to tell It from a natural skin colouring. More make-up is ^permissible at night than (luring the day-time, but it should never be conspicuous." DESCRIBING BRANDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 6 April 1929

DESCRIBING BRANDS. One of the worries of poundkeepers and newspapers is finding an ade quate description of peculiarly shap ed brands. If it is simply T over R reversed, or half circle over X, or omething of that sort it's very simple but when one portion of the brand has a distant resemblance to a dog's hind leg and the other portion looks like a snake suffering from St. Vitus' Dance, one is hard put to it to describe the brand satisfactorily in a newspaper advt. Generally the difficulty is overcome sufficiently for all practical purposes. In a few cases, however, trouble ensues. At the last sittings of the Small Debts Court at Copmanhurst, Arthur Leslie Barnier sued John Haclcett, pound keeper of the Copmanhurst pound, for the. recovery of £10 by way of damages. Plaintiff alleged that the advertised description of the brands on his impounded horse was so wrong that he failed to identify the animal therefrom. The defendant gave evidence that the brands were des cribed as accurately...

Crown-st.-I have not been able to carry out the work authorised by council as the old railway sleepers have not yet coine to hand.
