THE PROPOSED STATE BANK. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 30 October 1896

TITHE PROPOSED STATE BANK. IrTis very questionable whether it is ad visable at the present time, and at tihe present stage in tile current session of Parliament, to introduce the question of a State Bank, or at any rate to enter into it fully. No doubt, in many quar ters, the idea of a Government sup ported, guaranteed, and administered financial institution is a popular one. Private banks and b inking are not just now very sweet-smelling in the nostrils of the community, whbat with ruined sha re holders, emnbarrassed capitalists-who pretty well belie their name--and a financially depleted public generally. Thie term "associated banks," has been fully proved to be a phrase and nothing more. Some years ago, nhen the first symptoms of the banking troubles ap peared, we were told thalt "the banks "would stand shoulder to shoulder;" but as one after another went down un der tile fierce fire of the depression, and the shattering of public confidence, it soon became evident that they "ass...

_CRICKET NLT - Secretaries kindll send in their Results not later thant Tuesday Ereninugs, to secure insertion. Please place same in 'Editor's Box. BD MY.rroX. NORTH MELBOURNE v. EAST MELBOURNE. UusunAL interest was manifested in this match, commenced on the North Mel bourne Recreation Reserve on Saturday last, for two reasons-firstly, the two clubs had not met at all during the pre vious season, when North had met and vanquished all and sundry clubs who had come before them; and, secondly, A. E. Trott and Jack Harry made first ap pearance after their return from playing a season of English cricket. Better weather could hardly have been wished for, though the attendance was hardly up to anticipations. Dick Houston, win ning the toss from Laver, decided to bat on what appeared to be a very fair wicket, but whicl, unfortunately for the home team, turned out somewlat diffi cult to play on; and Trott, benefitting ly- h-is -Englisth experience, had iis opponents in trouble right through....
