THE BATHURST BURR. TO THE EDITOR OF THE RIVERINE GRAZIER. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 23 June 1875

THE BATHURST BURR. ' ?' ?- ? TO THB EDITOR OP TUB RIVERINE GBAZIRK,. Sir, — I seo in tho columns of your paper of various, dates remarks about tho Bathurst Burr.. The pest, is-, spreading all over tho colony, resulting in. loss to th& squatter by its getting into the wool, awl the number oC' hands he has to employ overy,- year to, try and koep 1ft down. Some suggestions have been made, as to how the,, plant could bo eradicated, none of ivbieh, I think would; bo of any use. One savs— sow some luxuriant, nlnnfc Hinfc will spring up and Bmotlier tho grow,th of the burr. In. your last issuo it is suggested to place, tho matter, in, the. hands of the Chief Inspector of Stock, Mr Bruce. With regard to the first it is impracticable,' tlie squnttei^ would have to sow his whole run with luxuriant plants,. It is not from patches where the burr grows tJijck that the squatter has most to fear; it is from hundredt.of ? plants all over his run, each plaut. bearing lts-hundreda of seeds, w...

1 MRT/KnTTR/N™ ? '(FROM OUR OWN CORKESPONDENT.V Juno 19. 1875. The discussion on the Land Bill has been proceeding with very littlo interest awaked on cither side, by thoso who have spoken on the subject, if I except a passage at arms between Mr G. P. Smith aud Mt Casey. Tho former stated, 'on his honor,' that tho Minister for Lands had promised to make the residence clause in the Land Bill ' all right' for him if he would only apply for a selection at Brandy Creek. Mr Casey denied the soil impeachment, and the house was left to choose between the gentlemen, which ono was .the most- credible. The Billis making slow progress, the second reading being deferred tul Tuesday night, and perhaps even beyond that period. An objection was raised against the Bill by Mr W. C. Smith, the fighting member forBallarat West, to the ellcct that as tho Bill lovied a tax on land, it should have originated in Committee of tlio House, and therefore it was' not properly beforo the Assembly. This caused s...

MELBOURNE. June 26, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 30 June 1875

MELBOURNE.' (PJtO.M our own corkespondent.1 June 26, 1875. Parliament has atlcngtli sent tlie Land Bill by a second reading into committee. It is likely to enter tho Upper Chamber with very little material alterations in its clauses, as tlie numbers who supported its second reading were 52 as opposed to 9 against it. Tlio most marvellous tiling in the discussion, was' the fact that a vast number ol members denounced the measure as the most, iniqui tous in its clauses, but when the division came these very members formed the majority -for its second reading. Mr Casey may . congratulate himself on his legislative success,. so far as the bill is , concerned, for he has man aged to allure the opposition over to his side, and secure their assistauce in passing his bill. The members for.St. Kilda, Messrs Dixou and R. M. Smith, have had a night to themselves, advocating the wrongs and rights of their borough as involved in the sale of tlie Albert Park. It was expected; that the, discussion...

V.aT.I? ANAT.D' (from our own correspondent.) June 25th. 1875. On Tuesday night a public meeting was held at the Church to take into consideration a lettlerfrom the Rev. II. 11. Yarrington to reconsider the decision that a pre vious meeting had come to, relevant to purchasing a Imrinonium lrom him, that meeting had decided not to buy it as it was not adapted to the requirements of the church, was difficult to play, and out of order, and he had left the matter to the option of being bought or for forwarded to him, the fatter decision was adopted, whereon he wanted it to be ' reconsidered,' which was done out of personal feeling towards him. On the Wednesday morning ' a poor unfortunate ' Black Gin' was found dead, the whole of the blacks tho night previous were in a beastly state of drunken ness, and some time in the night this 'Gin' crawled to a big log that was on fire, and in tho morning ? it : waS found to have dropped on her, and when seen life was extinct, and to. the astonishm...

SYDNEY. 25th June, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 30 June 1875

SYDNEY. (from ouu own correspondent.) 25th June. 1875. Still parliamentary business drags on, without any ?marked achievement.. During the week the Legislative Council has gone on a little way with the Land Bill, and the Assembly with the Stamp. JJuties. But the Upper House has only just completed its amendments 'of tho 1st clause of the Land Bill ;, and the . Assembly stuck fast last night at the preamble of the Stamp DUtics Bill. IIow lung these two measures have been under, con sideration. To come to particulars — though the Upper House has niade inauy amendments in the 1st clause ot tno i.anu mil, .tliey. are only designed to express more clearly the intentions of the Assembly. But from tho speeches of Mr Dc Salis and Mr Clias. Campbell, on'the second reading, it 13 pretty certain that they, and pro bably others too, will endeavour to mako .material changes in favour of the squatters. But it is not likely the House will concur in any such changes. As for the Stamp Duties Bill, t...
