THE BELLRINGERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 15 March 1883

THE BELLRINGERS. Tb e celebrated Lynch Family B ellringers , Instrumentalists, and Vocalists made their bow before a Perth audience for the first time last Tuesday eveniner in the Town Hall, when they certainly had no occasion to complain of want of patronage, as the Hall was densely crowded in every part — in fact, they had what may most emphatically be termed a . ' full house.' The evening's entertainment consisted of piano solos, which were skilfully rendered by Professor A. Statham, who is evidently a pianist of no mean order — some characteristic impersona tions by Mr. J. S. Farron, who was success ful in obtaining the loudly expressed approbation of the audience — some comic singing and step-dancing by various mem Tiers of the Lynch Family, all of which were well received — and of course the bell ringing ; the whole, concluding with a some what flimsy farce entitled ' Five Shillings a 'Week,' but in which the three actors made the best of their somewhat ridiculous parts. ? The Daily News. THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 15 March 1883

THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 1S83. While one, fortunately unimportant, portion of the Press has been breath ing out nothing but threatenings and slaughter against the aboriginal in habitants of the northern portions of our Colony; and while it has been urging the Government to adopt a summ.iry, repressive, and sanguinary policy with the wretched blacks — to deal with them without mercy— to hang them on the spot, after a hasty, and, almost a necessarily, partial trial — to give the settlers power to doal ?with them in their own way for a cer tain number of years, which simply means the toleration by the authori ties of oppression, cruelty, and murder, the Government has steadily main tained a policy of 'justice and mercy in spite of the agitation which was raised against it by some of the settlers. The calm and dignified attitude assumed by Sir 'William Robinson, and the im perturbable manner which he main tained while a storm of reproaches and even threats descended upon his devoted head, wo...

The Daily News. FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 16 March 1883

Ci)e ©ailp 38-etosf. FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1883. The Minute we published yesterday, ?which. His Excellency the Administra tor has addressed to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, with reference to the establishment of a Government Residency at Kimberley, will, we feel convinced, be read with interest by everyone,' and be approved by all. Of the language in which it is couched we say nothing, except that for lucid ity of style and conciseness of, expres sion it merits every praise. Of course it was only to be expected that His Excellency would follow the policy pursued by his predecessor with refer ence to the manner in which the dusky subjects of Her Majesty in this Colony should be treated, but in addition to this His Excellency has brought to bear upon the subject that experience of dealing with the trial of native prisoners which he has gained during his tenure of office as Chief Justice, and the lines he has laid down for the guidance of the Government Resident are as clear as they are...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. TRY STAMP MILLIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 16 March 1883

tETLEr^S^TO THE EDITOR TRY STAMP MILLIES. Sib,— There is a story of some poor Arabs from the far East who, as sometimes hap pens, found their way to London, and, on being asked what they thought of it all. just replied in their usual impassive way, that it was ' all very nice, but how could people live where there were no date trees?' And that is pretty much the writer's case ; only, for dates, read maize. I should think the Zulu King, in spite of being lionized, and even in spite of being petted and shaken hands with, by fair ladies of England, must have longed for the time when he would once more bei served with a nice earthen ware pot of Ze'geengi — ^Indian corn, boiled, partly crushed on an open stone mortar, and mixed with sour coagulated milk. So satisfied am I, that the tanners and other good people of this Colony only require to fairly try it and introduce the general use of Indian corn as a daily article of food, that ?I feel inclined to ask you to publish these few lines, ...
