There are always many and varied attractions towards attendance at shows, cut chief among these is good competition ,in the ring events. Penshurst' show has been fortunate in receiving a large number of entries in these' classes this year, and patrons can-rest assured that in this respect they will be well catered for. Arrange ments have been in the hands o£ta capable secretary in Mr James Daltoh, and a strong working committee, and everything points to a very successful show.

MECHANICS' CONCERT. Those who attended the concert, in aid of the funds of the Mechanics Institute on Saturday night were treated to afi; enter tainment of excellent quality. Visitors from Hamilton rendered the greatest assis tance with a varied repertoire that made each and every performer popular. Miss Byrne and Mr W. W. Rose comprised the local contributor. aDd both in duet and solo both maintained the esteem they had pre viously held.. There was a very good at tendance, And the Institute will reap con siderable b'nefit, thanks to the energies of the concert committee, comprising Messrs. ,J:; G. Chesswas and D. Greig. The Red Cross sewing meeting was held in the Mechanics' Hall on- Thursday last when, considering that only a week elapsed since last meeting, a large quantity, of work was handed in. The date was changed on account of- the Show which will be held next Thursday. The ladies are putting forth their utmost endeavours to make this a succ ss. CHARGE OF'ASSAU" Before Messrs J. G. Chesswas. W. A.   Kelly, and T. Farmer, J's P., Sydney Cot- trill was charged out of circumstances that have already been reported in the "Free   Press," with an assault upon Josoph Ryan. Defendent, who was represented by Mr   Silberberg, pleaded guilty under extreme provercation. Mr Silberberg, after a well   fought case eloquently pleaded that no con-   viction be recorded against a respectable   citizen who had done his duty to the com- munity. The bench pronounced a very popular verdict in dismissing the case.
