RETURNING OPPICERS' SXTfiNSES. f By' -Telegraph.) ? BRISBANE, July 19. Some trouble Jias been experienced by the Home Department over the ex- ' penses of returning officers In the re cent elections. The latter are com plaining that the Department Is treat ing them very meanly In this respect The Under-Secretary to-day said the Department did not Intend to pay more than would pay reasonable ex penses, and in some cases the amount charged was absurd. It was strange that where officorB were imblic ser vants there was no difficulty. The accounts were nsasonable and were promptly paid, but many of Uw other* seemed to think they could charge ?what they liked, and one in an outside electorate sent in a bill for £30, wMcii would not be paid unt:i it was reduce! by one-half. It It stated to he i«ob able that the Government will ask re turning officers who are not public servants to resign and will aiir-oint public servants in their places.

SPORTING. TURF NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Townsville Daily Bulletin — 20 July 1907

SPORTING. TURF NOTES. Entries lor the Halifax Turf Club annual require attention on or before Wednesday next, July 24. The incet inc follows a week after the Herbert , River J.C. Annual, so that the two fit in nicely. The two horses sent to \V. Black lock by the Messrs Ramsay Bros., of Oondooroo, to train, were a 3-year-old colt by Parthenopaeus out of Hima laya, and a yearling: brown colt by Ranfurly out of Himalaya. Thus a Sydney exchange :— 'Impor- ted Huckleberry was given a run at Newcastle races on Wednesday last, but he was started more with tlio view of acquiring a knowledge of the race course and a crowd than with designs on the stake, for he was green and too much above himself to display any galloping ability. Under these condi tions, Buckleberry created no surprise by running prominently in the rear. He is engaged in all the big handicaps of the spring. The proposal by the president of the New Zealand Racing Conference to license owners, ar.d to compel regis tration of a...
