RIFLE SHOOTING. ? — ? — -?? ? . .. 'Daily Mail ' Empire Gup. Yesterday the shooting in connection with the 'Daily Mail' Empire Cup com petition took place on the Franklin Range, twenty-two members of the Franklin Club putting in an appearance. The conditions .of the competition, for which the rifle club3 throughout the Empire are eligible, place no limit on the number that may shoot,' but only ,. the eight best cards ot the day are taken \o represent the club'a score. The weather was gloriously fine, there being practically no wind, the few occa sional'puffs' that did pass over the range being too light to interfere in any material degree with the calculations of the marksmen. The light, however, in the afternoon was bad, particularly at the 600 yards. Dr. Anderson and Mr G, A. Griggs arrived on the range shortly after mid-day, but they missed the firing at the 200 yards, and consequently dropped out of the contest. Dr. Ander son shot at the 500 and 600 yard3 ranges, getting 31 and ...

The Brand "Unsound." [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 25 May 1910

The Brand 'Unsound,' A SUBJECT about which a great deal was. said and written when it first came into prominence, and which engendered mild agitation, and, it might be said, a measure of indignation among fruitgrowers, has been reuived by the letter addressed to the Agri cultural Department by. Mr WV D. Peacock, and published in our last issue. It is that extraordin ary provision in the Common wealth Commerce Act which re quires that either of the words 'sound' or 'unsound' shall be branded upon every case of apples or pears shipped to England. In unmistakable terms he emphasises the absurdity of this provision, and lets a good ?deal of light upon the way in which it is regarded by the English buyer. In the opinion of the Britisher, he says, it is 'A choice sample of Australian humour.' Abundant evidence has been furnished every year since its enactment .that it is completely ignored in the Home markets. Except in cases where it is an established brand that.is concerned, the keenly ...

SPRAYING. [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 25 May 1910

. SPRAYING-.. \ This operation is now looked upon by all progressive fruitgrowers as work which must of necessity be carried out, as they realise that a tree ? covered with scale and other pests can no' more yield fruit which commands the attention of buyers than can an orchard whore the cultivation, pruning, and manuring are left- to .Natures sweet win. There are still, however, a number of growers who have not realised the importance of this feature of the work, and a certain percentago of fruit is lost annually, much of which, by the timely application of a spray, could, no doubt, have been saved. It must be distinctly understood (writes W.J. Allen and J. G. R. Bryant in the ' Agricultural Gazette ') that in ninety nino out of a hundred orchards spraying is absolutely essential. Diseases may not occur every year ; but experience has shown that theyrecur frequently, and in years or serious epidemics tne pronts from spraying are so great that the grower can afford to spray regularl...
