To the Editor of the South Bourke and Mornington Journal. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 17 July 1878

To the Editor of the South Bourke and Mornington Journal. SIR,-In your issue of 3rd inst. is a letter signed J. C. Johnston, purporting to be a selector here. There is no such person in this district. The writer evidently wishes to create excitement, and there is no truth in what he states, as no attempt whatever has been made to get money expended on the road lately exchanged with Mrs. Bourke, of Pakenham. A. CRICHTON.                       Gembrook, July 15, 1878.

Local Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 17 July 1878

Local Intelligence.     -----0----- The matter of the proposed road through Mrs. Bergin's paddock, at Springvale, has become a standing question and hitherto has affordod a subject for long discussions at the Oakleigh Shire Council meetings, but had not up to last meeting been advanced very far. Then, however, an motion was carried appointing Mr. Coates, of Springvale, as an arbitrator on behalf of the Council and instruct- ting the Secretary to request Mrs. Bergin to appoint another, and arrange for their meeting to settle the value of the land required for a road. Thus the matter stands at present, and, this important pre- liminary, step having been taken, the other neces- sary actions is likely to follow without much loss of time.   The retiring Councillors in the Oakleigh Shire are Councillorsm Ingram, Thompson, and Ar?strong Shave: not heard of any opposition to their as election. - s·i; Mr. John T. Dobson notifies through our advor tising...

DROMANA'. M. oiida " July 22id.. :Dromana Debating Society :held its first regular meeting on Friday last. - The at tendance,? however, was unavoidably small,' consequently the debate was liostp?bied. until next meeting. Letters were, read.from Dr. W. E. Hearn and R. Anderson J.P., the former accepting the office of President,' and the latter that of: Vice President. ` ' Considerable' excitement prevails here just now owing to, a strenuous effort being made to haveth e Post and Telegraph office removed from its present site. The Post master General receives deputations from those who approve of theremoval, and those who are opposed to it, on Tuesday 23rd. There are strange and unpleasant. rumours, afloat in connection with this matter, :which willino doubt' be prored 'or" disproved to morrow.
