LATEST NEWS Owing to the wind and rain last ^ evening, the first dance of the Sydney Jewish Social Club was postponed till Tuesday evening next, May 10, at Oddfellow's Temple, Elizabeth-' street. The Eev. J. H. Landau speaking to a repre sentative of the S. M. Herald (this morning's issue), gives his views on the fighting qualities of the Jew, and his opinion that since the ex pulsion of the Jews the national fall of Spain has set in. He states his belief that Comman der Sampson, of the TJ. States Fleet is a Jew.

"The Freemasons' Chronicle," Arrangements have been made for the pub- lication of "The Freemasons' Chronicle" as a     weekly newspaper on and after July 3rd, 1898. The new features of the Journal will appear in its issue of the 20th inst. Mr. Alfred Harris, of 'The Hebrew Standard," will revive the interest of "The Keystone" in this connection,     and add largely to the circulation thereby. The "Chronicle" was established over 16 years       ago, and has been carried on successfully by Mr. John Leveson, whose interest is still fully retained. Correspondence on Masonic matters will be much appreciated, and Secretaries of Lodges in Queensland will please send in their reports as early as possible for the current issue. On hand to do good. Wolfe's Schnapps should always be kept on hand. It is Aus tralia's tonic and invigorant, and stands pre^ eminent among stimulanas and cordials.

Svdnev Jewish Social Club. The first dance of the season was held at the Oddfellow's Temple, Elizabeth-street, on Tuesday evening last. Notwithstanding the inclination to rain about 28 couples attended, and spent a very enjoyable evening. Extra dances were played by Mr. Carlton Harris, and Mr. P. Levy. Miss Bear sang 'Th Swallows.' Light refreshments were partaken of on adjournment, and the President, Mr. L. Packer, pro posed ' Success to the Sydney Jewish Social Club.' In his remarks he welcomed the ladies and gentlemen, and hoped that the very enjoyable evening about to close would be the fore-runner of man}' more. He anticipated that with the strict regime as to the conduct of the club in such safe hands, large and valuable additions would soon be made to the membership. Marriages. The wedding of Miss Emily Franks of Sydney with Mr. David Abrahams, of Warwick, Queensland, was celebrated at the Great Synagogue on Tuesday, May 10th, the Rev. J. H. Landau officiating, assisted by the Rev. A. D. Wolinski. The unterferers were Mr. and Mrs. Harris Franks for the bride, and Mr. and Mrs. Solomon (sister and brother-in-law for the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were Miss Harriet Franks, sister of the bride, Betsey Gordon and Annie Solomons, neices Of the bridegroom. The brides dress was cream pongee silk, trimmed with cream, lace and baby ribbon to match. Dinner was laid at Levy's residence, 1 Albion street, Surry Hills. Mr. Rabinowitch presided, and proposed the toast of ' Mr. and Mrs. David Abrahams,' ther toasts followed by Mr. Mark Rosen and Mr. Lewis. Concerning Sleep. Much has been written lately concerning the phenomena of sleep. Many persons have aireel their views on thfe subject. Some assert as a rule people sleep too long, while others are in the opposite opinion. Dr. Andrew Wilson has recently made some apropos remarks on the matter. He first cites instances of celebrated men who needed a small amount of sleep, and says : ' Humboldt, who lived to be eighty-nine, is said to have declared that when he was young two hours' sleep was enough for him, and that the regulation seven or eight hours of repose represented an unnecessary prolongation of thS time of somnolence. It is also said that Sir. George Elliot, who commanded at the siege of Gibraltar, never indulged in more than four hours' sleep while the seige lasted, and that little affair occupied at least four years.
