KIANDRA. (from OUR CORRESPONDENT.) ; October 10. — Of late one of our mining friend has been astonishing us by reporting that he has not slept for nearly three months^ On en quiring into the cause of this deprivation of natural, rest, I have ascertained that he is a native, of the Southern States of America, and the termination of ijhe war in favour of the North has so attectedji his mental faculties and nocturnal repose, tliaj; he himself verily believes he will not sleep again until he has been home and agitated for a fresh rebellion ; still, be fol lows his daily purstiits, and seemingly enjoys good health. While passing through the southern extremity of our town one eveiiiug, not long ago, my at tention was; drawn to ,au unnatural noise, pro ceeding from an uninhabited building not f.ir distant. Determined to know the cause ol such clatter and diu, I advanced to tho door, and was soon accosted by the porter, who hesitated before he spoke, but at last stammered out ' On, you are ...

GLEANINGS. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY, AND RUST IN WHEAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut and Adelong Times — 16 October 1865

GLEANINGS. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY, AND 1 RUST IN WHEAT. A writer in the ' S. M. Herald , says : — Sir, — Having had more than 30 years' practical experience in agri cultural pursuits, and studied the best works on the subject, I ask for a small space in your valuable paper wishing to make a few remarks on what is now occupying the minds of many of your country readers. I will, first of all, allude to a meet ing of the society, held about a ? ? 11 i ? A v ? . l _n ? j?_ ? monm d acitj at wnicn a letter lrom a Mr Woolland, and dated Bodalla, was brought before the notice of the members, anid pronounced to be very important. So far, I also agree with them. We very often see and hear in the colonies the well-known motto, ' Advance Aus tralia,' but which the members then present appear to have entirely lost sight of, and, by a resolution passed, they imitated the freaks of a well-known character, by wheel ing about, and jumping more than forty years towards the last century. I will now ...

Local & General Intelligence [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut and Adelong Times — 16 October 1865

[?] The Escaped Prisoner Clarke. — It will be no surprise says the Braidwood Dispatch to our readers, when we inform them that Clarke, the prisoner who escaped from our gaol on Monday last, is still at large. The police in all directions are after him. One of the constables, Byrne, who started in pursuit in the first instance immediately he broke out of gaol, has, not yet returned. The oijily traces that appear to have been obtained of the runaway have not been beyond some six or seven miles out of town, but the account as to whether or not he was accompanied by any other parties differ. Some sav that he was and some that he wps not. It appears evident, however, that he has made for the mountain defiles, between this and Monaro, every inch of which he is fami'iar with, and where it is generally con sidered he will be out of reach of all the. police the colony could muster, from the fact that every exertion to capture him when he was at large some time since was fruitless, arid that ...

No title [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut and Adelong Times — 16 October 1865

As there is no interest more important to a colony tban the Agricultural, and certainly none ? in this extensive district, we call the particular attention of Farmers to an Act, 25 Victoria, No. 10, passed some time since by our Parlia ment. By this Act farmers can avail themselves of a loan on crops, just in the same manner as squatters can obtain advances on wool by the Wool Lien » Act. Byth acts, in fact, pre intended to enable wool-prowers and farmers to oive tanoihlf? sh ^ ~ n ? r. ? — curity on their crops, just as any person could obtain them on land or house property. If it be thought that these acts are more favourable to lenders than borrowers it is simply an error in judgment. To make this plain we. put the following case : — A, a farmer, wants a loan on his growing crops of B, the miller or corn fac tor. Under this act A can readily obtain it, because B knows that the law gives him a pre ferable claim on A's crops, which to all intents and purposes are as good security, ...
