REAL NEIGHBORLINESS. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 22 July 1914

REAL NEIGHBORLINESS. j An Instanct of becoming really friendly with one's neighbors Js rela ted by Judge Henry R. Sluite, the American author, in his book, "Farm ing it." He says he desired to dis cuss matters of common interest with his neighbors:— "The best' method of attaining this desired end was the thing that occu pied me day and night. We coum not invite our neighbors to our house until they had called. It was the purchase of a wheelbarrow that really broke down all barriers. "When I went there, like all' new agriculturists, I bought a large num ber of farming utensils, such as spades, shovels, hoes, a lawn-mower, hammer, axes, hatchets, a pigeon holed box of assorted nails, and last, and most important of all, a fine new fivc-dollar-and-flfty-cent wheelbarrow. "To a neighborhood the members of which had for the most part in herited the tools from long-deceased ancestors an opportunity to borrow •new and modern farm implements is a rare opportunity indeed, and the ice bound f...

FAMOUS ECCENTRICS. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 29 July 1914

FAMOUS ECCENTRICS. Paganini had his share of eccen tricity. He feared no one, and when he was disposed to fly off at a tangent neither audience nor King could keep him in the regular orbit. In the reign of Louis Philippe he agreed to play at a ^ourt concert announced at the Tuileries. Just before the concert he looked at the room. The curtains were hung so as to Jnterfer^with the sound, and he asked the superinten dent to have them properly arranged. The official paid no heed to the re quest, but so offended Paganini by his manners that the vklinist deter mined not to play. The hour of the concert came, but no Paganini. At last a n.esscnger was sent to his hotel. The violinist was there; 'but he had gone to bed. Paganini's eccentricity once caused him to be mobbed at Ferrara. In those days the common people of the suburbs of that little town looked upon the dwellers in the town itself as "a set of asses." Hence any yokel of the suburbs, if asked where ho came from, never replied, "F...

WORLD'S CHAMPION HEN. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 29 July 1914

WORLD'S CHAMPION HEN. Will poultry.-breeders ultimately succeed In producing a hen "which will lay an egg every day? Such an ac complishment seems quite -within the hounds of possibility, 'judging by the wonderful record established by Pro fessor James Dryden, who has suc ceeded in rearing a hen that has laid no fewer tl an 291 eggs in a year. Be fore this American accomplishment the world's record was held by Can ada, with a purejhred hen that had laid 282 eggs in 365 days. The hen in question was hatched on April 29, 1912, and 'began to lay when only five and a-half months old. Not only is she a cross-bred bird her self, but the parent birds also were cross-bred. There was nothing extra ordinary in either of-these, excepting the fact that the mother hen was a prolific layer of eggs, a trait that has j emphasised itself to an extraordinary degree in her offspring. No special care or attention was be stowed upon this abnormal egg-pro- '< ducer. She was reared and fed with...

TELEPHONE TALKERS. What an Elecoution Teacher Says. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 29 July 1914

telephone talkers. What an Elecoutiori Teacher Says. According to the trained ear of an elocution teacher, the persi^gnt use of the telephone has done much to improve the speech of the public in general and of women in particular. Whether or not this statement would stand the test in every case, it is certainly true that the woman addicted to tie telephone habit unconsciously acquires something of benefit not only in tie carrying power of a well-modu lated voice and clearness of enuncia tion, but also in general directness of expression, which such a limited con versation makes necessary. Any woman who doubts the truth of this statement has but to notice how quickly an intelligent maid employed in a home where there is much tele phoning will acquire a good speaking voice and nn air of self-confidence and personal dignity quite out of keeping with lier original manner. It is noth ! ing unusual nowadays for a prospect ive employer to inquire as to a maid's "telephone manner" before^ e...
