The Federal Campaign. [Newspaper Article] — The Muswellbrook Chronicle — 23 April 1898

The Federal Campaign. The opponents of the Common wealth Bill cannot be accused of displaying any undue baste in set ting their objections before the pub lic. The Easter holidays are over and very little »has yet been done. From the fact that so large a major ity of members of Parliament, who are the accredited exponents of the political aspirations of the people, have deolared against the Bill, one would have thought they would have lost no time in addressing their con stituents, and pointing out to them the defects to which they object. With the exception of one or two members, such as Mr. Haynes and Mr. Fitzpatrick, scarcely any have yet held a meeting. In Sydney, however, the campaign against the bill has been fairly opened by the meetings addressed by Mr. Lyne and Mr. "Want, and it may be hoped that the country electorates will in due time receive some attention. The advocates of the measure have had a tolerably good start, and they have made the best of their oppor tunity. Thi...

DISTRICT NEWS. OUR CoHRESPONDENTS.) Rouchel. An entertainment was held in the Main .Camp Hall on Thursday evening, 14th instant, in aid of the Scone Hospital. Gardner, junr., the pro moter in the matter, for the way in which she worked .to bring it to a suc cess issue. There was a splendid at tendance, the hall being quite crowded, which in itself speaks for the success financially. I think something like £10 was made, which includes the proceeds from the ball which was after wards held, the supper for which being abundantly supplied by the ladies in the neighbourhood. The hall was very beautifully decorated for the occasion with greenery and flowers, Mrs.1 Gard ner's pi any friends ably assisting her, 111 the work.
